We had the good fortune of connecting with Debbie Byrd and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Debbie, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
For a long time I resented my kids because I had this perspective that they were slowing me down in my career or the amount of hours I could work to earn money. But one day I was sitting around dreaming of traveling to Italy again and thinking about their slow way of life and how the majority of the people I’ve ever met there live very minimal lives in small homes, but they ALWAYS have time to linger and enjoy a cappuccino or a glass of wine and conversation. It dawned on me that I don’t actually need more or newer material things. Whatever I think I could have earned with an additional 3 or 4 hours a day of work would have just gone to buy more stuff. Why don’t I just relax and enjoy time with my people?! I don’t have to live in Italy to imitate the lifestyle.

What should our readers know about your business?
I sell real estate. It’s not exactly life changing, except that it is. The longer I’m in this business the more I come to discover that not all agents are good. I try to be everything I would dream of having in a Realtor. While I’ve been licensed since 2008, I’ve only lived in Fort Worth for 4 years. In that time I’ve gotten into 360West best realtor list twice. I don’t know anything about magic wands, but what I do know is service and an abundance mindset. You cannot serve well if you think there is not enough to go around. I told my 6 year old son the other day that I knew he was going to be a leader. He said, “How? No one ever follows me.” I responded, “They will if you serve them.” In order to lead in anything, you must first serve.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
That’s a tough one because it depends on which friend, but if the friend was like me, I’d start with a walk on the Trinity River trails and finish that with a cappuccino and brunch at Press Cafe. Next, we would go to one of the art museums in the cultural district of Fort Worth, or the Fort Worth Zoo if we had kids with us. Then we would head over to Joe T. Garcia’s for some margaritas and fajitas for an early dinner, followed by a walk around the Stockyards and a rodeo show. We’d finish the night with some cocktails at Drover Hotel.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband, Wesley Byrd, is my best encourager. He always knows the exact words to say when I’m feeling that slump in the ups and downs of self-employment. I’ve recently been inspired by Cynt Marshall and her latest book, “You’ve Been Chosen”. Also, there’s another realtor at League Real Estate, Mark Philpot, who always seems to slip some great truth about life or God into conversations that I end up thinking about for several days. I don’t think he knows he’s even doing it.
