We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniel Clearfield, DO, MS, FAOASM and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Daniel, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I have been working in healthcare for 15 years and I have been around it my entire life. The focus of healthcare should be on quality patient care, but I strongly feel the system of healthcare has become business-centric, and is no longer patient-centric. Many physicians are burning out of healthcare as we committed ourselves and devoted years of training to care for the patient, but are resigned to not being allowed enough time, resources, and support to properly care for our patients. I started Motion is Medicine to “break the shackles of the system” and to take back healthcare from the insurance companies, hospitals, and corporations, that disable our ability to care for the patient. My clinic’s model of care is to make it about the doctor and the patient sitting directly across from them; cutting out all of the people that have nothing to do with the patient’s care but are influential in dictating how their care is received.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I started Motion is Medicine in 2019 because I strongly feel that we have a broken healthcare system. Most physicians get into the profession of medicine as we want to help people. Many of us feel this passion has several barriers within the system of medicine. I started Motion is Medicine to “break the shackles of the healthcare system” and to make it about the doctor/patient relationship once again! I am doing this by being an out of network provider, providing cash-pay for my services as a physician. That said, I am able to come up with fair prices for my work as a physician and I am able to guarantee my patients the time, quality of care, and partnership in their care.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Very hard to know where to start with this, as DFW has so many amazing places to go! I grew up in Arlington, did Medical and Graduate School in Fort Worth, and now live in North Richland Hills, so I am much more comfortable with Arlington, Fort Worth, and the Mid-Cities than Dallas. That said, I really enjoy jogs on the Trinity River Trail, so would love to show my friend this. The food and social scene available in the West 7th street area would be great to show them at night.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shout out to two of the extracurricular activities I did as a kid on influencing the character of who I became as a man. The Boy Scouts of America had a profound influence on me as well as the sport of wrestling. Both of these taught me responsibility, accountability, work ethic, ingenuity, humility, and working as both an individual as well as part of a team.
I would like to shout out to all of the mentors who taught me the right way to practice medicine, with the patient as the primary focus. Most notably, I would like to shout out to my parents, Dr. Michael and Susan Clearfield. My father was inspirational in to showing me how to be the best physician, and both of my parents have had a tremendous influence on me becoming the person who I am today.
