We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephen Austin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Stephen, what do you attribute your success to?
That’s a good question. I would never think at 81 years old I would have over one million followers on social media and be the favorite internet grandpa. Being on TikTok has given me a fan base I’m just overwhelmed with. Mostly young people who send me comments about how much they love me and want me to be their grandpa or I remind them of their grandpa Doing a “Cooking with Steve” on TikTok where I don’t actually cook, I just make a peanut butter sandwich or fry an egg, and it has brought me some amount of fame. I was on The Rachael Ray Show, interviewed on CNN, Acess Hollywood, local NBC news station, The Today Show, Australian TV show, AARP website, Newsweek magazine, D Magazine, A Chinese news magazine and many more I was totally overwhelmed by it all I guess I was in the right place at the right time . I just try to be me and offer simple advice on each of my videos

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m retired and did work at the Dallas Summer Musicals at the Box Office. I loved my work and worked with some great people who are like family. We stay in touch and I miss it every day. I have been doing videos on YouTube for over 12 years. I had a small following and always had fun with what I did. I started doing TikTok just last year. TikTok is an app on your phone and you can do a 15 sec or 60-sec video. Most people on TikTok are young and do a lot of dancing and physical stuff that I can’t do.I’m 81 years old so I started doing a “Cooking with Steve” and would make a sandwich or open a can of soup and that was it. Because of the time you couldn’t do very much. Well it took off and before you know it I had over 1 million followers. Young people wanted me to be their grandpa or I reminded them of their grandpa.I started getting calls and emails wanting to do interviews. I was on Access Hollywood, CNN, Rachael Ray Show, Kelly Clarkson Show, NBC Today show, local NBC 5. That was exciting because Deborah Ferguson and a cameraman came to my apartment and did an interview. I was interviewed on Australian TV, AARP, Newsweek, D Magazine, and many more. I was overwhelmed. All because of my age,81 and doing a silly cooking show where I don’t really cook

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m from Dallas now living in Richland Hills, TX.I know very little about Richland Hills and Ft Worth since I’ve only been here about a year In Dallas, I would show people the hidden gem, Fair Park, I love downtown Dallas and all it has to offer. Deep Ellem, farmers market, The Arts District At my age, I don’t go out as I did, so I couldn’t give you places to go to eat or drink

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My sister, Nancy has always been my biggest supporter. She has always had a kind word or suggestion and now during the COVID-19 she has been shopping for me . She lives close by and makes sure I’m OK
