Meet Courtey Schawl | Business Consultant and Songwriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Courtey Schawl and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Courtey, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Success compounds over time. In the beginning, there is A LOT of upfront work when starting a business. You become a social media manager, the bookkeeper, the web designer, basically “the everything” It’s not fun and this is why so many quit. But once you push past the inertia it takes start something., everything becomes easy, given that you allow people to help you. I’m a mom with 3 under 3 and I had to force myself to balance as my ultimate goal in starting my business was to have more time with my kids and avoid the daycare dilemma. In the building phase, my husband took on a lot of the home responsible for a short time to allow more hours for me to take calls. Now I work 9-11 while my kids play at our gym and from 7:30pm-10pm once the kids are down. The rest of the day, I’m with them. Because it’s impossible to get all 3 to sleep at home, we do a car nap and on days my husband is home, he takes them, giving me time to work and on days he’s gone, I use the car nap time to think and brainstorm. Car nap has almost forced thinking time which I credit to the success of my business so far. I don’t believe you can have it all but I do believe most of us have time that’s being wasted. My husband and I quit watching TV and scrolling at night and it was the best decision we ever made.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I recently wrote a book You Are the Sum of Your Last 2 Moves: How to Use the Secrets of the Fibonacci Sequence to Get Unstuck in Life. My goal is to help people who feel stuck and want more out of life, grow into their unique calling and potential exponentially. I proved this is possible through my second business One Day Songwriter where I’ve created a community around speed songwriting and AI tools, teaching anyone how to write a song in under an hour by processing their personal life. I created this framework from my time as a music therapist in psych hospitals and instead of ignoring that skill, I repacked it and created a profitable business around it. This is what I teach others: to pull out their unique gifts they might not even recognize and create a business only they can create. It was not easy to start and I’m still in the building phase. I want people to know it’s okay to adapt and change to what the market wants. It’s okay to be wrong on what they want, but it’s not okay to keep trying to offer something people don’t want, so you need to adapt. I started out as a marketing agency (Social Script) and it turned into a personal brand my name, Courtney Schawl, the business consultant because I realized people didn’t want me to run their Facebook ads and instagram ads, they wanted my ideas. Although I still operate Social Script, I’m currently changing the whole done for you model to done with you for small businesses and retaining higher ticket clients in Social Script who are wanting full service ads.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My best friend also has little ones so because this is my life phase we would start at the Fort Worth Zoo. I LOVE how they let you get so close to the giraffes. We would definitely hit up World Springs and Puttery on a no kid day and go to all the parks and trails like Bicentennial Park and indoor playground like White Chapel and Cross City Church because they have a cafe making it a win win place for the kids and us. Food wise, Moxies, Quartino at Grandscape, Hush Kitchen, and Devivo Bos, and Kindred Coffee for an afternoon coffee.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shout out my mentor Myron Golden. He gave me the courage to use my voice and make an impact in this world and of course, my husband Harry who has always supported my big dreams and allowed the space to build. Instead of taking on another job or overtime like most Firefighters do, he protected the time I needed to build this.
