We had the good fortune of connecting with Christopher Box and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Christopher, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I feel one of the most important factors to my success is being able to channel the wisdom of my heart. Being authentically you is the biggest gift you offer the world. It is easy to fall into the trap that in order to be successful you have to twist yourself so people will like you. The truth is, authenticity is the new world currency. The more “you” you can be the more success you will have.
I used to think that success was money and things. Now that I am in my 40’s, I have many experiences to pull from that some people call wisdom. Wisdom ain’t free. You have to go through some stuff in order to earn it. Success is the culmination of all the things that you are that are authentically you. Success is being in the right place at the right time with the right people. I feel success is a state of being more than it is a dollar sign.
When I started Big Kizzy Hair 5 years ago, I received this piece of advice from the creative director of a large makeup brand, “haircare, huh? That’s a busy category. I wish you luck with that”. We both knew that she didn’t really mean it. But it was in my heart to do it. I knew that it was a risky venture, however, my heart has never let me down. The secret of my success is that I have always believed in myself.. even when others thought I was crazy for doing it.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
After working as a stylist in Dallas for 20 years, I decided in late 2017 that it was time to hang up my hairdresser hat and do something different. I have extensive experience in creating and developing hair extension products. Believe it or not, I am one of the original creators of tape in hair extensions. I always feel like I am in the movie Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion – except instead of inventing. post it’s I helped invent peel and stick hair. I wanted to get back into product development but this time I wanted to create a haircare line that could keep up with the what I lovingly call Big Texas Hair.
Big Kizzy Hair was born in the Spring of 2018. I literally got to make the haircare line I always wanted when I was working as a Dallas hairstylist. My clients wanted longer, thicker better and bigger hair! It was one of the hardest things I have ever done. And it was indeed a very busy category to crack.
Our big break came in March 2020 when all the salons closed. We quadrupled our sales almost overnight. My team and I had to work around the the clock so we could keep our social distance from each other. I immediately started a fund for the stylists that were our of work. I felt it was the least I could do to help support my hairdresser community. This small gesture went a long way to help our customers understand that we actually really do care about their experience.
Big Kizzy Hair Care
I decided I needed to flip the script on what a hair care line was supposed to be. Most people don’t fit into neat little categories. The truth was that most people get a variety of services, like hair extensions, color & keratin treatments. Also, most people have a combination of textures, hair densities and services they like to get in a salon.
There was a time I would have to recommend a ridiculous amount of care products to keep up with all the things my clients were doing to their hair. It was necessary and yet I felt it was absurd. I remember when I had my proverbial, “there’s got to be a better way” moment.
Basically, almost everyone is in an “it’s complicated” relationship with their hair. Some people have thin frizzy hair. Some people have LOTS of hair that is super fine. Curly hair people want to have straight hair and vice versa. You get the picture.
Traditional hair care lines focus on putting everyone into a box. For curly hair, use this. For fine hair, use this. But what if you have fine curly hair? Or thick, coarse hair that is thinning? As a brand, we feel this way of thinking is an outdated approach to hair care. You deserve products that can be used in a variety of ways.
All of our products can be combined or “cocktailed” to create a unique experience tailored to fit your hair’s needs. In addition, the same product that helps straighten your curls can also be used to enhance the curls. We think that is pretty clever.
Big Kizzy Hair Care was designed for anyone in an “it’s complicated” relationship with their hair. From our amazing hair thickening products like FATT Shampoo & Conditioner to our weightless frizz smoothing serum, Split personality – we understand the struggle of dealing with hair that doesn’t fall into just one category.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Friday Night: Off to Oak Cliff to grab tacos and margaritas La Calle Doce, Then off to The Texas Theatre for a queer based film series sponsored by Cinewilde. Night cap at Barbs Pavillion
Saturday: Breakfast in Addison at The Market – best little Jewish deli ever. I live for their crispy potatoes. A stop at Half Priced books and then off to Soultopia for some crystal and hoodoo voodoo shopping. Burgers at Hunkys for lunch and then happy hour at JR’s. If we are feeling a little fun maybe a stop at The Rose Room for a little drag show.
Sunday: Breakfast at Meddlesome Moth followed by some flea market fun on Riverfront. Tacos for lunch at Fuel City and then off to Dragon St. for some art gallery fun. Top the day off with snacks and drinks at the Virgin Hotel – best people watching in Dallas!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate this article to Sarah Wyatt. She was my assistant in the Salon I used to own, The Beauty Box Salon. Sarah started working for me right out of beauty school. I had to sit her down and give her big heaping spoonful of truth serum. She was going to have to step up her performance or I was going to have to let her go. I looked her deep in the eyes and told her that I believed in her 1000% and I needed her to do the same if she wanted to stay.
10 years later Sarah has become an accomplished and successful stylist. I deeply respect her work ethic and ability to believe in herself even when the odds where stacked against her.
