We had the good fortune of connecting with Chelsea Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chelsea, can you tell us about an impactful book you’ve read and why you liked it or what impact it had on you?
The most valuable books I have read recently have been The Chiffon Trenches by Andre Leon Talley and Paris Hilton’s memoir. I have been reading a majority of memoirs of people in the fashion industry with trying to find my voice for my current book I am writing. From each, I have found some memorable selections from each that have guided either my writing or personality in business.

Paris Hilton’s memoir as well as her first book made me gain confidence at a young age. Her first book even though a little more materialistic and with a very y2k theme, had guiding steps for how to be a confident person. It has helped me become the way I am and help others with dressing through their insecurities. Her current book discusses how in her moments of despair she created her own brand and how to be confident in creating a character for herself in being a strong business woman. Which again is something I live by in myself and my business. A simple fake it until you make it frame of thought. As well as everybody is only insecure about themselves in their mind. No one is really looking at you or judging you, they are too in their own minds with their own insecurities.

Andre’s book really spoke to how I wanted to discuss my own stories of growing up and how fashion has aided or deceived me at times. A quote that really spoke to me was, “I depended on sartorial boldness to camouflage my interior vortex of pain, insecurity, and doubt.… I never wanted to look like anyone else.” This portrayed some of the same values of how I view what we wear and what it means to people.

Through my upcoming book ‘Closet Therapist’, I plan on discussing my own insecurities and short stories through fashion. As well as, countless numbers of hours with clients pulling on spanx, complaining about their body, or personal life, while in the fitting room. They would talk more about an event than the outfit for that event. And beyond the outfit, the why of how they look or what look they are trying to achieve makes them feel. I will also discuss basic human perceptions of articles of clothing and style, how clothing and friendships can be seasonal, when to clean out your closet, and who has put me in said closet by being censored or shut down. Whether that be relationships, childhood bullies, or my own perception. This book will be about the psychology behind what we wear and why. Seeing everyday fashion as an armor we wear on our skin to face the world and show the bit of personality we show.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My name is Chelsea Davis, I am a wardrobe stylist and local runway show producer. I have been working in the fashion industry since I was 15. Through working in the many parts of the DFW industry while having multiple different opinions on fashion and the various clients I have had, I am currently writing a book on the subject.

I have successfully grown my styling career in the DFW with some of my most regular clients as moms, teens, and influencers. I pride myself on having a realistic and sustainable view on style, outfits, and your closet. Pairing pieces from your own wardrobe and accessing your own budget in how I shop for my customers. I am one of DFW’s most affordable personal shoppers. I also do a great deal of online business through instagram with body education, how-tos on styling, and online personal shopping.

With regularly hosting and producing local fashion shows in the area, I also attend many of them to either scout for talent or view different outlets of runway production in the area. With the Dallas/FT Worth area being known for mostly wholesale and boutiques, I partner with a lot of local businesses to be successful as well as help them advertise for up and coming designers. My company, Elite Image Management, top of mind is to ensure the diversity of models, as well as give opportunities to those who do not fit the cliche model industry standard.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love to go to some of the best views in the city to do photography. I have a lot of hidden spots around the DFW that make a perfect instagram background. A day out with me involves going to one of Dallas’ best vintage shops since opening in 2005, they have items dating 1940s to 1980s. Whether it is costume clothing, jewelry, records, or random bowls filled with knick knacks and teeth, you will be able to find some kind of prop at this shop.
I also enjoy going to downtown or uptown on the weekends. One of my favorite spots to eat is at Toulouse with some of my favorite French dishes like escargot and oysters.
For night life, I would recommend stopping by The Joule’s speakeasy, Midnight Rambler or popping over to the gayborhood at the strip on Cedar Springs. I feel myself in the area as I feel I can dress however I would like, without being scrutinized for the sake of fashion or dress code.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shout out all of the people along with my journey. To all of my past and current clients, as well as contributors. My best friend Katie Mayhall, that has been many roles in my career down to my assistant during show production, Jazmine, Bree, and Nicole as my star models, for being professional at every event, and Bella Modeling school for training some of the most elite models I have worked with in the area.
