Meet Chamu Prabhu | Cake Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Chamu Prabhu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chamu, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting my own business was never an overnight decision made. Baking was the very first thing i fell in love with when i moved to the United States. It started as a hobby several years before i actually decided to turn it into a business. It was a gradual process over years of self-learning the skills and applying it with the best of my knowledge. i enjoyed experimenting all kinds of desserts and when my friends and family loved it, it instantly gave me the confidence to decide on starting up something small like making custom cakes for their special occasions. The immense support from them afforded me a better opportunity to grow my business to a place where it is now. Today, after creating so many beautiful memories with my cakes in people’s lives and getting their amazing feedback of how special it was for them, i wouldn’t have planned my career in any other way.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I believe in quality, taste and using fresh ingredients for my cakes and desserts. The freshness, unique flavors including fusion flavors like Rasmalai, Gulab Jamun, the preferred custom design and the not-overly-sweet cakes is what people love and come back for more of it for every occasion of theirs. Being a self-taught baker, every custom cake comes in unique design and has it’s own challenges. It will be exciting and nervous at the same time especially while handling tiered cakes. But every time when the goal is accomplished and the cake receives compliments i feel proud about pushing myself off the limits to achieve the look.
It was definitely not an easy road to get to where I’m today professionally. I have had my failures in building a good recipe, cake damages during transport, unexpected difficult challenges in handling a finished cake due to mishandling. But it has led me to grow and understand that there are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work and learning from failure.
It’s always a beautiful thing when career and passion comes together. I believe in giving my best in each of my creation and to bring smiles on people’s faces. It is such an honor to be trusted to make the cakes and treats for all beautiful occasions like weddings, birthday parties, engagement, gender reveals, baby showers and many more, Every cake is curated to the needs of the client and my goal is always to work hard to bring your dreams come true in a dessert form.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Dallas have some pretty cool places to visit and hangout with friends. I would love to take my best friend to Dallas Arboretum which is located on the shores of White Rock Lake and has extensively beautiful nature loving spots to see and take pictures. I would also take her to Grapevine Historic Downtown which is home to winery tasting rooms, the Grapevine Vintage Railroad, the Palace Arts Center, the Grapevine Glockenspiel Clock Tower, one-of-a-kind shops, live entertainment venues, restaurants, and art galleries.
For weekend fun, i will plan to visit Grandscape at the Colony where we can shop, eat and watch movies. the wheel at the Grandscape gives a 360 degree views of North Texas.
Few other places that i would love to visit are
Klyde Warren Park at the Downtown Dallas, Dallas zoo, Fortworth Water gardens and the Dallas Reunion Tower.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Being a full-time Software Engineer for 2 years to quitting my job to support my husband’s career in the United States, I always thought of getting back to my 9 to 5 job sooner. Both me & my husband’s family doesn’t have a business background, But when i realized my hardcore passion for baking and Cake decorating, my husband firmly believed that i can do this. He have been my biggest pillar of support throughout my journey from day one till today. Right from taking care of my little one to making sure I stay calm and composed while i decorate a cake, he handles me all. While I make all the pretty part of making and decorating a cake, My husband and my son handles the packaging and cleaning up the mess part. It’s definitely a team work in my home while it comes to my business. Next, I have this amazing group of friends who orders cakes and desserts from me for all their occasions and keep immensely supporting me right from the beginning to till date. Their efforts to spread a word about my small business and bring clients from all sources they knew is incredible. i feel truly blessed to have them in my life who have mentored and supported me throughout my journey. And ofcourse, a significant recognition would have to go to my mom, dad and brother who constantly encourages me with their love and support.
