We had the good fortune of connecting with Bermarie Winston and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bermarie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I began the business in 2020 under the name Hey There, Cupcake. I mostly operated as a “side hustle” because I had a 9-5 corporate job still. I saw my skills getting better and better and I was getting more customer inquiries than I could take on. But I was still too scared to quit my job and take my business full time. Fast forward to June 2021. After a couple of management changes in my corporate job, I was miserable and only working for the paycheck. I felt burned out and overworked and so I requested to cut back on hours. My supervisor told me it wouldn’t be possible and that I needed to consider what was more important – my job or my health. I decided my health/mental health/happiness was far more valuable to me than a paycheck. I left my corporate job in June 2021 and made the jump to full time entrepreneurship. I had absolutely no experience with running a business and putting everything I had into this endeavor was one of the biggest risks of my life. But I can honestly say that every second has been so rewarding and I’ve never been happier than I am right now. I get to make a living doing something I truly love and I never thought that day would come for me.
What should our readers know about your business?
Blush + Whisk specializes in cakes and desserts with the taste you remember from your childhood, but in a modern, chic design. All of our products are elegantly designed and packaged, which we believe adds to the celebration. Our mission is to encourage people to stop and celebrate life. We started this business during the quarantine of 2020 and saw the need in our community to spread kindness and joy. We believe after the last year and a half that we have all gone through, we deserve to celebrate, even the little moments, because those can end up meaning the most. So whether it’s your 50th birthday or you’re simply celebrating making it through the week, we’ve got a treat for you and we’ll cheers right along with you!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I don’t get out to explore the city too much since I am mommy to two toddlers, but I love XOXO Dining Room. The food is amazing and the whole atmosphere is a VIBE. If you haven’t been, grab your girlfriends and go check it out. Make sure you bring your camera so you can get all of the Instagram-worthy pics!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I owe so much of my success to so many different people! Throughout this journey, I have been so fortunate to meet and work with so many successful business owners that have been kind enough to give me advice and share their stories with me. The Center for Women Entrepreneurs at Texas Woman’s University has been one of the biggest support systems. They have provided so many resources, from online webinars, to networking, and even free business counseling. I had no experience in business or marketing, but since finding them and working with their team over the last few months, I feel so much more confident in the potential of my business. I am still in shock that a program like this exists and hope that every woman starting a business – or even already in it – takes advantage of the help. I am truly grateful and really feel like I have an army of successful woman standing with me.
