We had the good fortune of connecting with Audra Springer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Audra, how did you fund your business? Do you think you would do anything different if you could go back?
My business is 100% self funded. I was blessed with a dad who taught me from day one, “save your money” and “invest”. Once out of school and about to start my hair business, I knew I didn’t want to dip into my savings too much. So I got a part time job on the side. At one point I had two part time jobs. I have been doing hair for 5 years. I would say the first 2 years were the “hardest” in terms of breaking just even. On top of working the extra jobs and building a clientele. No matter what I always paid myself first by putting money into savings and put money in my investments each month (sometimes each week). I would pick up extra hours at my part time jobs if I needed to. After year 3 is when everything became more and more consistent. This past August I was able to go full time, self employed. Would I go back and do it differently? Absolutely not. Even though some of the part time jobs I had before and during my hair business were not what I wanted to do forever, I met people who were essential in making my business happen, life long friends and I learned so many valuable life lessons. I’m a firm believer in everything happens for a reason. If I can give any kind of advice, it would be what my dad gave to me.. save your money, invest wisely, plan for retirement and don’t keep up with your neighbor. Chances are, your neighbor is struggling. Hard work pays off. Don’t give up!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
From an early age I knew I wanted my own business. It changed from baking cakes, to having a hotel to just about anything at one point. I finally decided after attending a hair show that I wanted to pursue a career in the beauty industry. You wouldn’t believe how many teachers told me “you’re making a huge mistake not taking college classes or going to college.. you’ll never make anything”. I laughed. After high school, I attended Navarro Cosmetology. That took about a year. Then I decided I wanted to move. Get out and just live somewhere new. I have family in Grapevine, so Grapevine was the move. After moving and realizing “okay now what”. I took some courses at another trade school and got my license to perform laser treatments. I knew deep down this isn’t what I wanted to do forever. At the same time I hadn’t started doing hair yet.. One day my coworkers mom came in and said “hey I hear you have a hair license”. Five years later I have been running my own hair business in her salon. Specializing in hair color. Most of my clients would probably tell you blonde hair color if you asked them. Was is easy? Absolutely not. I would stay up late, on the verge of a breakdown asking myself “were those teachers right? Did I make a mistake?” But I got back up the next day and pushed through. I’ve learned that if you put your mind to it, you can make it happen. What I want the world to know about myself and my brand is that the more hours you put in, the more you will get back. Whether that is friendships, relationships, family, money, traveling, your business or even yourself. Those are the things that mean the most to me.

Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
I would say for sure have to make a trip down to the Ft. Worth Stockyards. West 7th is also very fun. There are so many good places to eat in Uptown Dallas. I love LSA Burger in Denton. Chill Sports Bar in Grapevine on a Friday or Saturday. Downtown Grapevine on a sunny day. Hiking down by Grapevine Lake. So many exciting things to see or do!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I just want to shoutout all my wonderful clients!
