We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexandra Uceda and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexandra, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
I like to remind myself progress isn’t linear, and I believe the same can be said for the path of my career. In times when my work ethic is low, and my motivation has dropped, I tell myself, it’s okay to not be self driven all the time. It’s okay to take breaks, to rest your mind and body, and try again the next day. The success of my career isn’t going to reach its prime within a day, a week, or even a month. It’s a process of ups-and-downs, and if you aren’t happy with the journey, you’ll never reach the destination.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What excites me most about creating art with makeup is simply expressing myself through the applications. Makeup has no boundaries, and if able, I can break those boundaries however I desired. There is no perfect, black and white, way to apply makeup, and that’s what I love most about it. The instructors at L Makeup Institute portrayed this message every day to us students in class, and I believe that’s how I got to where I’m at today. There’s no settling with makeup, and I find myself still getting surprised by my craft as I perfect it more and more. And as the reality sets in, and my lows come back, my passion for my art pulls me back up. The journey to my future has barely begun, and I find myself eager to see what it has in store for me.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m all for the lively, artistic districts that live on the outskirts of Downtown Dallas. For a patio lunch covered in beautiful, serene decorations, I would take them into Deep Ellum’s Ebb & Flow. It’s an ideal place to visit, have some cooled drinks, and eat good food! For more areas to shop and hang out, I’d take them down into the Bishop Arts District, a couple blocks covered in independent boutiques. Each store owner provides a variety of purchases all differing from their next door neighbor, so there’s plenty to chose from. And at night for dinner, a relaxing evening at Paradiso, yet another atmospheric restaurant with a mediterranean menu. I’m biased towards unique and creative outlooks in cities, so these two districts are a favorite of mine!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Of course, my biggest supporters throughout my whole life has been consistently my mom, Melanie Uceda, and my older sister, Sophia Uceda. My mom wasn’t shy to teach me about the hardships and responsibilities life will grant me when I was growing up. She’s taught me for as long as I can remember that I am human, and at some point, I will fail, but what’s most important is getting back up. My mom showed me how to stand up and put my foot down to pave the path for my future. My sister Sophia, on the other hand, taught me the importance of my craft and how to perfect it. Being an artist herself, although not makeup related, she understands the world I work in, and how to protect my career from derailing. Without the influence these two have impacted on my life, I can safely say the person I am today would be entirely different. Where I am in my path in life has been shaped due to their words, and I am so grateful for them standing by me all these years.
