We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Malave and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alex, how do you think about risk?
I think taking risks is a huge part of any creative journey! Whether it comes to creating something new or getting opportunities to showcase yourself, there’s always some amount of risk involved. In my case, I took a chance and moved hundreds of miles away with bandmates I hardly knew at the time for my music career and it’s been an invaluable decision for me. I also think that in terms of making interesting music, it’s always a little bit of a risk to try out new things and explore avenues you haven’t previously taken. At the end of the day though, I think that’s also part of what keeps things interesting.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My goal with my music is to make something that people can relate to their own experiences. I’ve definitely had times growing up where a song really resonated with where I was at the time and now I want to do the same thing for others. I feel like there’s a ton of emotions and experiences that are pretty universal in life and sometimes it can be really validating to listen to a song from someone who’s felt something similar or been in a similar situation. Being an independent musician can definitely be tough, but it’s definitely one of the most rewarding things i’ve ever done. Whether it be booking shows, growing your audience or coordinating releases, there’s a lot of work involved in being independent but conversely, I think it feels that much more rewarding when it pays off. Through this journey, I’ve learned that you have to take ownership of your goals and create concrete plans to reach them.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely try to take them to a good variety of places! I’m a bit of a nerd, so an arcade bar like Free Play is a fun way to spend an evening with friends. I’m also a sucker for ski ball so i’ve 100% spent a good chunk of time playing with friends there. Recycled Books in Denton is a great place to spend an afternoon with a great selection of books, vinyl and collectibles. I can spend hours looking through for some serendipitous finds. Finally, you can’t come to Dallas without catching a show at one of the awesome venues down in Deep Ellum. Three Links is one venue I’ve particularly enjoyed working with in the past.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My bandmates deserve a huge shoutout for believing in my vision and being awesome supports on and off stage! Love y’all, Liym, Stevie and Blake. I also gotta give thanks to everyone that’s ever listened to my music or caught a show, I literally could not do this without y’all and it means more to me than you know.
