Meet Alex Cochran | Family Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Cochran and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alex, every day, we know how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I’ve always been interested in photography but never really took it on full force. My mom was a family photographer in the early 2000s, and I’ve played around with her cameras quite a bit. She taught me the basics of photography. While getting my BA in Journalism at the University of North Texas, I took a course on photojournalism.
It wasn’t until I had my son earlier this year and started taking photos of him that I realized I could delve into this more. Thus Wild Child Photography was born.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m not super precious about my photos – I feel like that’s what sets me apart. I want each session to feel relaxed, unscripted, and totally you. It should be memorable, not stressful. I never want my clients to worry about their kids being “too loud” or “too rambunctious,” or their home being “too messy.” I’m here for the beautiful space that my clients and their loved ones take up. We’ll find perfect in the imperfect.
One of the things I’m most proud of is a branding session I did for a friend’s new skincare line. It was a little out of my comfort zone but it was incredibly fun and I learned a lot about placement, posing, and lighting. The hardest part about taking photos is trusting yourself. Skill is part of it, but you also have to trust that you will get the shots you want.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a Denton local. I LOVE this town so much. It truly has my heart.
Some of my favorite food spots include Rusty Taco, Juicy Pig, and Wild West Shave Ice.
If you’re into the bar scene, Harvest House, Miss Angeline’s, and The Bearded Monk are usually my go-tos. Less loud and more chill, plus lots of non-alcoholic options.
D20 Tavern is a great place for a drink and board games. They host special events and have gaming rooms in their downstairs basement area. It really adds to the vibe if you’re there for a D&D game.
I spend most Saturdays at the Denton Community Market. There’s so many great vendors (my mom included!) and it’s always a great time. I love shopping local and supporting small businesses.
One fun little shop downtown is The Brown Thumb, a Black woman-owned plant store. You also have to hit up all three bookstores; Patchouli Joe’s, Recycled Books. and The Plot Twist!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mom has always been a creative person and an entrepreneur. She was a stay-at-home-mom, but she’s always had her own businesses. She’s been a photographer, a personal trainer, and now she runs a flower farm. She’s the most hardworking person and truly dedicated to her craft. Her creative efforts inspire me everyday.
Additionally, my husband and my friends have been supportive of everything I do – from photography to being a mom to making career moves. I’m endlessly grateful to have such a wonderful village.
