We had the good fortune of connecting with Abbie Alter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Abbie, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I had been in the Corporate world for 20 years and had earned the ability to make my own decisions and implement my own ideas without boundaries and bureaucracy. I had moved from London, England with my husband’s job and despite a short contract job, I made a decision not to go back into that world when I moved to Plano, Texas. But it was my role as Mom that led me to start my own business. I noticed that with such a large influx of transplants, like myself, that there was a growing number of Women like myself, with Kids. They lacked solid friendships, a support network and most importantly a channel of advice and recommendations to help them make the right decisions for their family. So what started with a local Moms Group on Facebook, quickly evolved into a concept of combining Community with a Media Platform which is the “Go-to Resource for all Things Moms could ever need in Plano, TX” and a new brand, “Plano Moms”
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have built something totally unique in Plano, TX and I am proud of the journey of learning my team and I have gone through to build it. We are 6 years old. That’s the equivalent of 1st Grade! We’ve come a long way since those Newborn sleepless-nights! When I take a look at our monthly reports and measure against our KPI”s, I am proud of our growth in our Community and Audience and the Engagement rate we have on our Social Media and on our Website. We are leading the way in Local Website Traffic for our Demographic and ability to be found on Google and currently serve 7,000 Moms on our Email list, 30,000 on Facebook and 6,000 on Instagram, as well as an average of 45,000 Visitors at planomoms.com. The main lesson I’ve learnt is to Listen. Listen to organic conversations, understand what burning problems exist and what Questions are being asked. And provide solutions and answer those questions.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is exactly what we publish on our Website and on Social Media. It depends on the age of the Kids they have or whether it’s just a Girl’s Day Out. Some of my personal favorite places and things to do are: – Drink a Margarita on one of our many Patios around the City of Plano. – Eat a legendary slice of Whiskey Cake at Whiskey Cake, Plano – Hike at Arbor Hills Nature Preserve – Shop and eat in Historic Downtown Plano – Go Back in Time at the Heritage Farmstead Museum There are many more, but here’s a good place to start from!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a Shout out to my team of Rockstar Moms, who work from home supporting our Moms on Facebook and Instagram, who also produce Resources and Ideas on our Website, (Live) Video, Directory Listings and Email Newsletters and work with Local Businesses to help them build their businesses. My unsung heroines: My Admin and Moderator team on Plano Moms Talk, Facebook Group and my loyal and enthusiastic Media Mavens: Mel, Michele, Melissa, Bon Bon and my Web Developer, Carleigh.
