We had the good fortune of connecting with Kriti Bisaria and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kriti, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
My success can be attributed to my diligent work ethic and organizational skills. Being highly methodical has played a vital role in my accomplishments. When tackling big projects, I like to break down the work into milestones and tasks. I find that this approach makes it easier to manage my time effectively, meet deadlines and safeguard me from feeling overwhelmed by the enormity of the project.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
1. Please tell us more about your art. My art is heavily influenced by my upbringing in India where I was exposed to a rich culture and art history. My work embodies a yin-yang quality, reflecting my Gemini spirit, and often delves into themes of both strength and fragility. As an artist, I revel in the beauty of duality and the complex interplay between opposing forces.

When I’m not behind the camera, I enjoy spending my free time biking, scuba diving, or just being on the beach. Being in the water is therapeutic for me, and you can see that in my underwater fashion works. It is both a means of relaxation and a source of inspiration for my creative endeavors.

2. What are you most proud of or excited about?

I take immense pride in my journey of learning underwater fashion photography. It all began when I was 20 years old and was captivated by the art. After a few initial attempts, I knew that I wanted to specialize in this field. To achieve my goal, I went through laborious scuba training, workshops, and courses to sharpen my skills and gain a deeper understanding of this unique niche. It gives me immense joy to be able to shoot underwater fashion professionally and excel in it.

3. How did you get to where you are today professionally? Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges?

My journey of becoming a fashion photographer and then the Director of Photography at Rebecca Minkoff has been remarkable but definitely not an easy one. When I moved to the US for my Master’s degree in Fashion Photography, adapting to a new culture and environment was just the beginning of my struggles. One of the biggest challenges was getting my work noticed in a highly competitive industry.

To overcome these challenges, I worked hard to build a strong portfolio that showcased my skills and perspective. I was always networking, attending events and workshops to meet other photographers, models, and fashion insiders. All these efforts paid off. Living in New York City was definitely a huge advantage because it was a constant source of inspiration and creativity.

I wasn’t afraid to take risks and try out new photography techniques, which eventually led me to discover my love for underwater fashion photography. It was this niche that helped me stand out and gain recognition in the industry.

In hindsight, I am grateful for all the challenges I faced because they helped me grow both as a professional and as a person. Each experience taught me valuable lessons that I carry with me today. I always strive to maintain the same level of passion and hunger to learn that I had when I first started out, and I believe that this mindset has helped me achieve success in my career.

4. What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way?

I’ve learned three significant lessons along the way. The first is that consistent practice leads to perfection. The second is that staying connected to the cultural pulse of your community ensures that your work remains relevant and resonates with your audience. Lastly, I’ve learned that being open to feedback and criticism helps you grow and improve your craft.
