We had the good fortune of connecting with Alpa Arora and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alpa, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?

My first memory of Yoga is when I was about 7 years old – my mother practicing it daily with a local group in our community in a northern suburb of Mumbai, India. And I was first formally introduced to the practice at the age of 17, And now at the age of 44, I now know that more than helping me maintain my physical health, it has taught me how to tap into my inner strength, resolve, and an encompassing love.

It has nourished my well-being and guided me to lead my life with courage, fearlessness and a quiet confidence – values that have helped me through challenging phases of immigrating to the US with a new born, working through the loneliness of being away from family, finding my place in the new country and a cancer diagnosis.

And therefore, as a mother I had made up my mind to ensure that Yoga is a part of my boys’ everyday lives. They are 15 and 13 years old. I began the process when they were much younger. So in my head I already had an informal curriculum.

When the pandemic hit in March 2020 and I was requested by my younger son’s school to teach an online class, as a volunteer, to help the children cope with the craziness. I was ready and promptly took on the opportunity.

As I taught a few groups through the weeks, I saw how they benefited from it. That motivated me and that’s when I decided to take the programs to more schools and reach as many children as possible.

And that’s how Good For All Yoga

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Good For All Yoga offers Yoga programs that are spefically designed for children; PreK – 12th. Most of us understand Yoga as a physical exercise that improves flexibility and overall strength. Yes, it absolutely does that. But Yoga goes further. It supports your physical health but it doesnt end there. The practice of Yoga is essentially for the mind.

To help you understand further, as per Yoga, our mental mechanism has 4 compartements; the intellect (decisive, that learns and creates); the mind (speculative, that feels & emotes); the identity and finally, the memory. Now, modern education is only focussed on the ‘intellect’ and we leave the health of the speculative mind to chance. And therefore, we see or know so many individuals that are very successful in life in terms of fame, money, creativity etc but struggle with mental health issues. And we wonder why that happens. That is because the success of the intellect in the world does not equate to mental or emotional stability.

Good For All Yoga curriculum is based on exactly this aspect of human experience. Our classes include the physical postures but our focus is to provide tools for mental and emotional health like Breathing and Mindfulness Techniques.

We want everyone to know that our motivation is to positively contribute, in any way, to a brighter future for our children and therefore humanity. We know our children are hurting. The reasons are many. And in the past few years, the hurt has only gotten deeper. But, through my own life experiences, I know that each child has it in them to handle it all. I have a strong belief that our children can lead their lives with courage and fearlessness when empowered with the Yogic tools. And I know they work because I have had that experience and also tens of children whom we have taught since 2020.

I will take this opportunity to address parents, guardians and all adults who can influence a child’s life to make mental and emotional health a priority. It is something that we need to work together on every day, just like brushing our teeth. I am always looking for more opportunities to talk about the benefits of Yoga to parent / guardians/ teacher groups. I have given talks at a few schools in Plano TX and plan to keep the discussion going. We cannot expect our children to figure it all our on their own. They need to learn the tools of managing this complex body and mind.

Finally, what I would like the world to know is that at Good For All Yoga we have a big dream. Our dream is to reach as many children as possible around the globe and give them the gift of this timeless knowledge that will empower them to navigate through life with ease and confidence

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ah! This is a fun question!

Lets see,
1. I would plan at least 2 -3 hikes. There are some beautiful parks and hiking trails in the suburb of Plano, TX. For example the Bob Woodruff Park

2. I would take them to Legacy West – a fun place to shop and eat. I love Earl’s Kitchen and Bar, Haywire, Taverna. Legacy Hall is so fun too with many exciting events!

3. Another place to eat would be Uchi / Uchiba in Dallas. So yum!

4. Dallas has quite a few museums that are absolute fun to visit!

5. I would also take my friend to Go Ape Ziplining.

6. Would do a Spa day for sure. There are some great med spas in Richardson.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents.

My Pa.
I remember in Grade 5th we were discussing career choices in one of our classes . At that time I really didn’t know much about it but I responded ‘A business woman’.
My father had entrepreneurship in his blood. Which is why I have always been inclined towards it. Even though I took on couple of corporate jobs since my graduation, I kept coming back to starting my own ventures. And Good For All Yoga is the latest one.

My Ma.
Ma knew for a long time that I would get in to teaching Yoga. She bought me a book in 2011 from one of the oldest Yoga institutes in India called The Yoga Institute, Mumbai India – and signed it with a note, encouraging me to teach to children. I guess Moms know best 🙂
