Meet Adrian Mariset Mills, APRN, CNM | Owner of The Spiritual Midwife LLC

We had the good fortune of connecting with Adrian Mariset Mills, APRN, CNM and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Adrian Mariset, what is the most important factor behind your success?
When I entered the field of Midwifery, my inspiration for pursuing the career was for the endless opportunities to connect with women. This connection could come in many forms: spiritually, mentally, psychologically, or physically through medical means. In any form, the connection requires interpersonal and intrapersonal skills. I feel as though I have mastered the ability to empathize and show compassion towards others. This is the most important factor that I believe is behind my success and the success of my brand. When my Midwifery clients come into my care they feel the genuine concern I have for their well being.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a Certified Nurse Midwife/Advanced Practice Registered Nurse. I provide medical care for women during pregnancy and throughout their lifespan. I predominantly provide care in the home with women who desire home births.
What sets me apart from other providers is that I encourage and promote the spiritual aspect of women’s health and pregnancy; providing space for women to embrace their inner wisdom. I am most proud of the successful home births that I am a part of and how I assist with reducing the rates of Maternal and Infant Mortality with my care. Many of the clients that are in my care would be at increased risk of cesarean section but we are able to reduce their risks during prenatal care and childbirth education.
To get where I am professionally, did not come overnight nor did it come easily. I faced many struggles and challenges pursuing the career of Midwifery.
Transitioning from the career of Social Work to Nursing to Nurse-Midwifery required a lot of patience, sacrifice of time and energy, fortitude and commitment. From balancing work and life, to finding an adequate preceptor, to learning the ins and outs of entrepreneurship. I overcame these challenges by staying focused, steadfast, and with constant prayer and meditation, maintained my mental clarity and avoided distractions. Self care became a prime priority in ensuring that I didn’t and don’t provide care from an empty well.
I learned many lessons along the way in how to provide empathy and maintain professionalism at the same time. I learned the value of healthy boundaries and knowing my limits. I am capable of doing many things but not everything on my own. Community is essential and developing synergetic connections are key. My brand works effortlessly with other providers who assist with the success of a home birth (chiropractors, doulas, lactation consultants, childbirth educators, etc.).
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are always something fun and interesting to do in the city of Dallas; from year round carnivals, to authentic food trucks, to a plethora of museums. I am a family person and enjoy doing things with my husband and children so we frequent locations that are family oriented. We enjoy going to the Perot Museum of Nature and Science or the Frontiers of Flight Museum near downtown Dallas.
Although we are not native Texans, we embrace the Texas spirit by going horseback riding at Broken Bow Ranch. We enjoy being in nature so we frequent many of the hiking spots such as Cedar Hill Wildlife and Preserve, Joe Pool Lake or Rockwall Lake. Some of our favorite restaurants to visit are Pappadeaux Seafood, the restaurants at Trinity Groves, for vegan or vegetarian dishes Recipe Oak Cliff and Sankofa are awesome. And for dessert, Chills 360 in Deep Elm has great ice cream shavings.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
