Meet Mara Marek | Personal Trainer and Comedian

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mara Marek and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mara, what role has risk played in your life or career?
My relationship with risk has been fluid within the rollercoaster of my life. I used to be a jump before you look person, but after the recent loss of my husband, who had taken some pretty major financial risks, thinking there would always be another tomorrow, I have made some much needed revisions. I do assess the financial risk in a much more calculated way, making only minimal investments monetarily, (but I still go for Gold on taking chances on things). I’ll still run and jump at opportunities, but I’ll take a little peak over the ledge first…The greatest risk of all would be to never at least… try. Not waking up everyday with the attitude that I’m going to at least take one step towards success is my version of death. All you need is one step a day, two is bonus, but one should be celebrated!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m both a Personal Trainer and a Comedian. I have a passion for both and they really do complement one another. (sounds like I’m trying to convince myself;) As a personal trainer, I have worked with a full range of clients from those surviving through cancer to top tier athletes surviving through the Olympics. But that didn’t happen overnight, I started as a cyclist with a prospective professional career, but was taken out of the game by…a vehicle, it hit me, real hard…which slows you down quite a bit. So I had to rehab myself, but also had the athletic background. Which gives you a base of knowledge. Outside of having the skill, building a personal training business requires gaining the trust of the gym members, and also continually educating yourself. Building a comedy career requires daily commitment to writing and performing, creating relationships with fellow comics and bookers. You have to show your grit, determination and dedication to both. NEITHER CAREERS ARE EASY, they both make having a personal life insane, (which is probably why I’ve been married and engaged so many times).

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The Stockyards, The Texas Motor Speedway and probably to shoot guns…make it real Texas. Oh…and some horse riding!!!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My partner in life, and now my guardian angel, David Bravo
