We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa F and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lisa, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
Many new homesteaders do not realize the monetary investment that goes into start up. Animals, feed, buildings, etc are expensive. Sure we can be cautious and limit costs but it is expensive to start a farm even if reusing or using cheap materials. For example, we built a pig barn and run as cheaply as possible but it cost us a bunch when all was said and done. That did not include animals or feed. Just structures and fencing.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We spent our whole lives in the corporate world. When my mom died of Alzheimer’s in August 2021, Ryan and I had been talking for the past year about how short life was. We started our homestead, started our YouTube channel, and talked about quality of life vs simply living. We built all we have together and are proud of what we learned along the way, I retired in November 2021 to focus on life and what matters. Ryan continues to work full time of his own decision as well as for his own reasons. I am in charge of the farm business and loving it. We decided that if life is so precious, it was time to live it. We have always loved thriftily so this was manageable.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My friend April recently visited South Dakota in April 2021. We toured Mount Rushmore, the Badlands, Custer State Park, WindCave National Park and Devil’s Tower in Wyoming. The natural beauty of the United States is what we enjoy. We also enjoyed spending time on the farm. Simple living…spending time with each other and with the animals is what it is all about. It is life changing. It creates an atmosphere of appreciation for what we have vs what we don’t have.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband Ryan, deserves the world of credit for supporting us both in this endeavor. We started our channel on YouTube and he has always been the most supportive of me and my endeavors. I owe it all to him. He is a loving and supportive man. I can’t think of anyone else I would want to spend my life with!
