We had the good fortune of connecting with Miranda Rangel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Miranda, what matters most to you?
The biggest lesson I learned in my first video production job straight out of college was I’m very driven by authentic connection. While I initially loved being at a fast paced start up company, learning new technical skills every day, and navigating a new city, I quickly started feeling drained. And not just in a “tired at the end of the day” drained. I had a wake up call one day, looked around and realized I spent 40+ hours a week with coworkers and clients I barely knew, the genre of work I was in didn’t fuel me, and the people I loved most lived thousands of miles away. When I moved to Texas to be closer to family, it was also a fresh start for me to set my goals and priorities straight. Filming weddings had always been a long term dream of mine, so I decided to make it a reality. The flexible schedule has allowed me to have more intentional time with my loved ones, but what I love most about my job is getting a front row seat to couple’s love stories. Connecting with brides is so fun and personal, and even connecting with other wedding vendors has been really rewarding. I feel honored that I get to wake up and do a job that truly fuels me.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a wedding cinematographer, inspired by real love, beautiful light, and well told stories. My emphasis is always on the couple, and how I can create a video that will serve them and capture their story. I love picking up little details that might be overlooked on a wedding day. I’m proud of the fact that I’m a female videographer in a mostly male dominated space, and I love to bring my unique perspective and emotion to the films I create.
I actually got my start with photography, and have been photographing weddings on the side since 2013. Wedding videos were starting to get really popular at the time, and I would search Vimeo basically crying at everyone’s wedding films, and thought “I wanna learn how to create something as powerful as this”. I decided to get my degree in video production BECAUSE wedding films inspired me so much. When I graduated, I got my first video job at a fast growing startup, while still doing weddings on the side. After 6.5 years of full time video production, moving a few times, and still doing weddings on the side, I felt ready to launch Rosemary Films Co. There’s so many details and tasks you need to be on top when you’re filming a wedding, and I made sure to work out all the kinks before I went full time into weddings. Because obviously, you can’t redo anything. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is on a wedding day, time is everything. Yes, being in the right place at the right time for all the big moments is part of that. But for me, investing in quality gear that is quick and efficient is the best way to completely focus on the couple, their day, and their love. If there’s a tiny piece of gear that costs hundreds of dollars but it will help me save even just a few seconds of time setting up on a wedding day, then it is well worth it. Everything I invest in and educate myself with for Rosemary Films Co is to be able to serve my couples better, and give them high quality films unique to them.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If it was my friend’s FIRST time to Texas, we would first have to cover the basics like Whataburger, The Fort Worth Stockyards, the Texas State Fair if they’re here in the fall, and the Gaylord Texan! Once that’s covered, I’m definitely showing them all my favorite spots near my stomping grounds like Roll n Poke, Chuys, Kura Sushi, and making sure they try some moon milk from Summer Moon!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I got my start learning all about how to shoot weddings by assisting Mike Davello over one summer during college. From then I was hooked! Watching him work taught me how to shoot weddings efficiently, while making the couple feel comfortable and relaxed. You can learn all the technical aspects you want but watching how someone works really teaches you the nuances you need for a wedding day to go smoothly!
