Meet Brandon Concepcion | Photographer, Story Teller

We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandon Concepcion and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brandon, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m originally from the Island of Guam. It’s part of a chain of small islands in the Marianas, which is considered to be a United States territory.
Growing up my grandparents always emphasized that family and respect for people are some of the most important attributes for a person and as a Chamorro (a Guam native). It’s something that I’ve always carried with me and have tried to uphold in my personal and professional lives. Creating a family like connection with my clients, so much so that they feel comfortable and relaxed during our sessions is important to me and it helps me honor my culture.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
At the moment, I’m wrapping up the final sessions for a series I’ve created called “I Love My Skin”. I plan to start the steps to begin creating and eventually publishing my first “coffee table” book made with the stories and images of the people I’ve sat with in these sessions.
Crafting these images with these people, has been great learning experience, I have been able to really sharpen my skills as a portrait photographer. I was able to take my photography back to the basics and relearn that lighting is EVERYTHING. I’ve discovered that by creating a genuine family like connection with people, it helps to make these intimate moments with them special and allows me to dive deeper into their story and generate an image that speaks to the viewer.
This series allowed me to learn more about myself and my brand because it opened up moments of time to really sit down and receive what my clients had to say.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First we would start off at Waynes Wings, its a small black owned resturant who is known for their wings. Its so good that we have not been in a wing stop since we has our first bite.’
If it is your fist time in Texas we would have to make a trip to a Whataburger spot and treat your taste buds to a Patty Melt the Texas way.
Our South Town area is an up and coming area to have a few drinks, food and views of downtown San Antonio.
take a trip out to Guadalupe River for a nice river float to enjoy some sun and a dip in the water.
If you want some authentic Gelato make some time to visit South Alamode Panini and Gelation at the Blue Star Art Complex. The owners are from Texas and Italy. My favorite cup of gelato is half dark chocolate and half lemon, I know it sounds weird but it was recommended by one of the owners and I honestly haven’t looked at another flavor.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, I want to thank God for giving me this talent and ability to capture images that tell a story or invoke an emotion, without his hand in my life I’m not sure where I’d be.
I want to thank my wife, Ashley for always lifting me up and supporting me. Even in my most critical moments, she finds the words to bring me back to center. And to my son, Maverick all of this is for you. I love you both so much.
To my sister, thank you for always believing in me and sharing so many positive outlooks in my journey. To the moon
My Family and Friends without you I wouldn’t be doing this today. You have been there since day one and I truly love each and everyone of you. Thank you
Last but not least, I want to thank everyone that has been apart of this series. This body of work wouldn’t have been possible without your story and your yes. Thank you from the bottom of heart.
