We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Prins of Coldwell Banker Realty in Dallas Texas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alex, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Everything in life is a risk.
When I was 28 everything around me seemed to be crashing down. My 7 year career as a medical esthetician was coming to an end. I moved from Mississippi to Dallas, and tried to start my own business. Yet, life tried everything in its power to defeat me. It nearly did.
So, I decided to make a change. Take a risk. And become a real estate agent. I promised myself that I would give it everything I got.
Everyday I woke up, and challenged myself. I had no idea what I was doing or what the future would hold. I taught myself how to make shirt films, edit commercials, create marketing campaigns, photograph, and so much more. I wasn’t afraid to push myself. I had nothing else to lose after hitting rock bottom.
Through real estate I learned that everything in life is a risk. You have to think outside the box, and not be afraid to get it wrong. I made a lot of mistakes. There were times I didn’t know how I would pay my rent, but I kept going. I kept taking risks.
As one of the top selling real estate agents at my office….taking risks has paid off. It took hitting rock bottom, and risking everything to come out on top!
What should our readers know about your business?
Being a real estate agent is not easy. You are not only a business owner, but you are helping people make the biggest financial decision of their lives. You are literally making dreams come true.
When I was younger, I didn’t always have a home. I grew up in foster care until I was adopted at the age of 4. Even then I didn’t understand the meaning of a home. I didn’t know who these strangers were that I was living with. My parents had to teach me what a home was. They had to show me what a loving family was.
After many failures life led me to being a real estate agent. Finding other people a home when I didn’t always have one means so much to me. My first client was homeless, sleeping on a friends couch. At the closing table be said, “I have a home now”……. It all made sense to me.
Home is the most important thing in life. You never know what people are going through. So, as a business owner I try to always give 100% of myself. I try to always understand the other person.
I also try to stand out. I don’t want to blend in with everyone around me. I create a lot of artistic short films, commercials, and photo shoots that are unique. I pour all my creativity, and love into my career. So, people have to stop and think about what I am trying to say. What emotion or story am I trying to get across. It has proven very successful. I don’t want to be like all the other realtors around me.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Dallas is one of the best places to live. They have so many cool neighborhoods, and places to go. I tend to hangout in East Dallas.
My apartment is close to Lower Greenville Avenue, and Lakewood. On the weekends a must is stopping by Buzzbrews in Lakewood for brunch. They have the best mimosas, and crepes. Also, the vibe is very funky inside.
Then it’s off to Lower Greenville Avenue. This is a destination in Dallas. You can walk around, and stop by so many fun places.
I love to stop by HG Supply Co for lunch. They have one of the best rooftop decks in Dallas with amazing views of Downtown. Not to mention that their food and drinks are to die for. They are always packed so get there early. Everyone that has been to Lower Greenville Avenue has eaten here. It’s a must.
Usually, I wrap up my day at Inwood Tavern. It is the dive bar of all dive bars. I mean, they serve your drinks in red Solo cups….not to mention the drinks are strong and not expensive. It is always packed with regulars. I’m always up there playing pool, dancing, or just hanging out with friends.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This might sound cliche, but my parents are the reason for my success today.
Both my mom, and dad are the two most inspirational people in my life. They ran a foster home in Chicago, and ended up adopting 5 children including me.
They taught me what a home was. They worked endlessly to raise us right while always managing to give selflessly to not only us, but to everyone around them.
When I wake up in the morning I think, “what can I do to make my parents proud?” They taught me the meaning of a dollar, what a hard days work looks like, and to always help others. They deserve all the praise.
