We had the good fortune of connecting with Bianca Soto and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bianca, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk taking has played a huge role in my career. Taking risks is necessary for growth in every aspect of life so the business world is no different. Jumping into something new comes with a mixture of fear and excitement. I personally overcome that fear by reminding myself that there is always a solution to every problem, I just need to find it. I also take into consideration that regardless if I am successful or take a loss, in the midst of it all I learned a lesson and gained experience. These lessons and experiences have molded me into the business woman I am today. Life is way too short to stay where you are comfortable. I would 100% want to know what happened if I tried than to not have done a single thing and always wonder what could have been. Opening my salon is probably the biggest risk I have ever taken, but it has also been the most rewarding. In the past few months I saw my vision of Modemia Salon come to life day by day. Looking back now I am so thankful I took the risk of opening a self funded salon. Owning a salon is so much more than being an owner. I took this risk to be able to provide an amazing environment for stylist to grow and take their own risks as well. If I would have held back I would not have the beautiful salon I get to call my second home. My best advice for anyone who is contemplating a risky decision is that no matter the outcome you will either be successful or learn a valuable lesson that will bring you closer to success. Every journey to success is different and you may hit a few snags along the way but it doesn’t mean you should give up. Keep going!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is and always will be hair colors and styles! As a kid I always enjoyed art class the most. I knew I wanted a career that involved art but I just didn’t know at the time what that career was. Fast forward a few years and that art loving kid found a new canvas, my clients hair! Being a stylist was the first step in my career and now that I ventured out into owning a salon I have grown to be more appreciative of my early days as a stylist. Getting here and being able to offer a salon space to other stylist has definitely been a journey! It was very difficult to get to this point in my career, as a Latina in the business world I was not taken as seriously as I would’ve wanted, but that made me push and try harder to be able to accomplish my goals. This came with many trials and mistakes, but also a lot of successes. I was able to overcome any challenges that were thrown my way by reminding myself that if I give it my all I can accomplish big things in life and no one can take that from me. The biggest lesson I have learned so far in my career is that no one is going to hand you anything. If you want something you have to be determined and driven to go after it yourself. It is up to you to accomplish your goals in life. If there is one thing I want the world to know about my story is that no matter where you come from you can be successful and you cannot let anyone tell you otherwise!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Where do I start! If my friend was visiting town I would definitely take them to all of my favorite restaurants! Some of my favorite places to eat at are Mash’d, Mesero, Jonathons Diner, Vidorra, Guajardos, Te Deseó and Pluckers of course! I love being outdoors so a day of exploring DFW would start off with a hike at Cedar Ridge, the morning views are amazing there! I would then take them to brunch at Jonathons Diner, their chicken and waffles are the best! After that maybe stop for some ice cream at Melt Ice Creams. I would probably go for a bike ride at Trinity after that. Then have a nice dinner and a few drinks at Vidorra and make my way to end the night at Cafe Salsera for some more drinks and dancing!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My business has been able to grow so much thanks to all the support that my family, friends and clients have given me. I continuously say that the people that help support my business play a huge part in all the achievements in my career. My parents raised me to be responsible, they taught me good work ethics and showed me that anything is possible if you just put your mind to it. I am eternally grateful they taught me those values because a business needs this to be successful. My brother Alex and my sister-in-law Vero who always dropped anything they were doing to come help if I needed it. All my friends who in some way helped me open the doors to my salon. Robert, Abelino, Gaby, Steph, Erika, Vania and Jaz I couldn’t have asked for a better group of friends who no matter what I can always count on. My boyfriend and his family who helped me build out my salon. I didn’t realize when I met him how big of a part he was going to have with the expansion of my business. He helped me with the construction side of the salon opening. Which I’m beyond grateful for because that was not my area of expertise! The owners of the the two salons I worked at before growing the courage to go out on my own, Mari and Deisy. Cosmobella and Pixie Glam was where I initially grew my career and I’ll always be grateful for those days of learning. Last but not least, my clients who consistently keep my business busy and booked! Their loyalty is very much appreciated because without my clients I would not have a business to begin with. The bonds I have built with my clients mean everything to me because they make my career so enjoyable. There are so many more people that helped me bring my salon to life. So to all my family, friends and clients, THANK YOU. Modemia Salon would not have been possible without you all.
