We had the good fortune of connecting with Serene and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Serene, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I’m inspired by the way that music has the ability to make people connect. Even if you have a totally different circumstance or environment than someone else, music can still bring you together. It can make people feel happy or sad, confused or enlightened. Music can be anything that you want or need at any moment. Some of my favorite memories are tied to the songs that were playing at the time. It means so much to me when someone tells me that one of my songs helped them, inspired them, or just made them feel good. That connection means everything.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When I create music, I usually don’t have a process. I could be anywhere, doing anything when inspiration hits, so I’ll usually jot it down in my notes or create a voice memo on my phone. I’ve been told that my beats are unique and I believe that that is due to my “process” being pretty chaotic. Sometimes I work on songs for days, sometimes it’s months, but I never complete a song in one sitting because I like to come back to it with a new perspective and new ideas.

Making music has always been a challenge for me, but I absolutely love challenges. They force me to think, but music is a challenge that also makes me feel. Putting together a melody to lyrics to a beat is such a satisfying feeling, and every time I complete a song, I feel proud of myself. Even if weeks later I don’t necessarily love the song anymore!

One thing that I have learned from making music is that nothing is every going to be “perfect”. No matter how many times I adjust or change a song, there will always be something that I could do differently. The beauty in that, though, is that I can keep creating, learning, and growing. I love looking back at songs that I wrote years ago and seeing how far I’ve come.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love brunch, so any place with mimosas, I’m there! I especially like Yolk and Meddlesome Moth! I love eating so I’m always exploring new places. A lot of times, I’m looking for something new, so it’s rare that I’ll choose to go to a place multiple times. Yolk, however is one of my favorites because their pancakes and mac n cheese are so good!!

For activities, I would suggest Andretti and Pinstack. Andretti has super fun indoor go karts that go incredibly fast. They also have VR games that really make you forget where you are. Both Pinstack and Andretti have tons of video games that are fun to play. I’m not sure exactly what it is about Pinstack, but of all the places that have arcade centers, it’s the one I gravitate towards most. Pinstack might be known for it’s bowling, but I go for the games!

Another good arcade place is Cidercade. The fun thing about them is that you get to play games while trying out all their different in house brewed ciders!

When it comes to dinner, my number one choice is Fireside Pies. Not only are their pizza’s amazing, but their caesar salad and blackberry cheesecake are my favorite! It’s not often that I go to a restaurant to get an appetizer, entree, and dessert, but I can’t resist when I go to Fireside Pies.

Lastly, I love bars, so I would go to Parliment for the ambience, Tulum for the decor (the interior is so gorgeous and the drinks are delicious!), and Deep Ellum to bar hop. There’s so much to do in Deep Ellum night and day, so exploring that area is a must!

And, of course, it wouldn’t be a trip to Texas if you didn’t have some Whataburger. Although it’s not my favorite fast food, it is my favorite fast food breakfast. Whether its 11pm or 11am, you can find a hungry Serene munching on a Whataburger taquito!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to my parents for always believing in me and being my cheerleaders. They’re not only my greatest supporters, but my mentors and motivators. I feel blessed to have parents that have supported my dream since day one. They push me each and every day to be a better me, to not give up, and create more.
