We had the good fortune of connecting with Ty Higby and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ty, how do you think about risk?
In starting my own business, there were certain risks involved, including quitting my full-time job and investing in camera gear that was not particularly cheap. At the time of me making this decision, I received a lot of criticism from family and friends. Although this criticism came from a good place – one of trying to help me – I had a vivid picture of what I could achieve, and I had to be true to myself and pursue my passion. One of my favorite parts of that time was: even though I had not made a single wedding video, I knew I would do anything possible to become the best in the industry. I would give the most value, and do the most I possible could for every bride + groom I interacted with. This philosophy of giving more value than you could ever receive back from the couple has paid some incredible dividends. I’ve had the chance to become a preferred vendor at some of the biggest venues in DFW, including The Castle at Rockwall, The French Farmhouse and Knotting Hill Place. I try my best to learn as much as possible from all of the vendors I interact with, and take the appropriate calculated + educated risks whenever possible. I love what Mark Zuckerberg has to say in regards to risk: “The biggest risk is not taking any risk.”. By taking calculated and educated risks throughout your working career, you expose yourself to the people and circumstances that give you the wherewithal to become the best version of yourself – a version of yourself that is able to accomplish exponentially more than the other version of yourself that never fulfills his/her potential.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Being in a creator in 2020 was not easy. What WAS easy was spirally down financially, and that is what happened to most creators. By putting in 2-3 times the amount of hours of work, my wife and I were able to successfully navigate our business through the pandemic with record high yearly gross + net profits. The biggest contributing factors to our success was our relationship to God. He has helped us accomplish everything. He was able to guide us to know what decisions to make, and what situations to avoid. We also decided early off in the year that we would spend minimal (essentially none at all) time exposing our minds to the overwhelmingly negative news and social mediums. As we did this, we noticed that our perspective on life became more and more positive during a time where it was natural to fall victim to the wave of negative emotions that 2020 brought with it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My wife and I love living in Frisco, but spend more time outside the state + country when we take time to relax! Some of our favorite places to visit include: Iceland, Denmark + North Shore in Oahu! Everywhere in Iceland is breathtaking, and it’s one of my favorite places to fly my drone. Denmark has the unique old European architecture, and I’m convinced that Hawaii has all of the worlds happiness in a couple remote islands. 😉
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My wife has been the biggest support to me in pursuing my passion. She believed in me when no one else did, and I owe her everything.
