Meet Enrique Nevarez | Studio Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Enrique Nevarez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Enrique, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
Consistently making paintings. Whether I liked it, loved it, or disliked, just giving myself a opening to mess things up. The older and more experience I get with my materials, I see them also transform into difference purposes from my creative practice. Being consistent has been a big element in getting my narrative out there.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve been working on opening up for years narratively , it’s been a journey and wasn’t something that came easy to me. The opportunities I’ve gotten have been good old hard work, whether that’s writing a allocation for a grant or entering a art show. Everything takes time, taking photos , buying materials , thinking, writing etc. What I want people to know about me is I’m here wanting to alter change and representation from a male perspective. I grew up around strong women who made things happen for themselves. They became my super heroes in my day to day life. I feel that maybe I can spill a bit of a different perspective in museums spaces in a more intellectual manner for them. I don’t know if it’s the southern gentleman in me that just questions how women are depicted ,but we are heading to grad school this fall , so I’ll have more time to process my concepts head on.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Bishop Arts in Dallas would be a to go places for me like Chan Thai’s Restaurant, great food and Hmart in Carrollton has really great food variety whether it’s a bakery or Korean Barbecue place, or some ice cream. They also have some great karaoke spots there too.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Sedrick Huckaby , Benjamin Terry, and Spencer Evans have been a big influence in my growth artistically. The Art community in Fort Worth has also been a great advocate in giving space for younger artist like myself to take space. I feel like Texas in general really tries to welcome everyone in the conversation of what art can do compared to other places.
