Meet Destiny Alexander | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Destiny Alexander and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Destiny, why did you pursue a creative career?
I didn’t really choose an artistic career. It chose me (as cliche as that sounds). I was blessed with the gift of storytelling through photography and I’d be doing the world a huge disservice if I didn’t use it to tell the stories of black and brown people how they should be told.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart is my ability to see genuine beauty in everything and bring that forth through my work. That is actually what I’m the most proud of. I’m excited about where my career is going next, focusing on more editorial work, personal projects, and challenging myself to try new angles and tricks, which is how I got to where I am today. I always try to challenge myself to be better than me. I want my next project to be better, smoother, cleaner, more creative than my last. It’s never easy because naturally I’m afraid to be seen trying but that’s the only way to improve. “So what if it sucks, it’s better than nothing,” is what I tell myself to get over that fear and that’s what I want the world to know about me. That I’m a masterpiece and a work in progress all at the same time and that’s ok.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So I’m a very artsy outdoorsy kind of girl and my best friend is more of a thrill seeker which is the problem we face whenever she does come to visit. So a day would probably look like us waking up to have brunch at Dream Cafe then heading off to take a glassblowing class at Dallas Glass Art, then we’d get lunch from Krab Kingz because we’re both from the east coast and love seafood, and after that we’d probably be full so we would just chill with some daiquiris from Daiquiris To Go and catch up since we don’t see each other often.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I dedicate this shout-out to my dad who always had a camera in his hand when I was growing up. Whether disposable or digital, he was always capturing the moment just because, but that subconsciously taught me how to see the beauty in everything and savor it unapologetically.
