We had the good fortune of connecting with Kimberly Kort and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kimberly, why did you pursue a creative career?
I have spent my life planning events, parties, meetings, and family life. I enjoyed all of it very much. Unfortunately, I had been getting migraines for the past 15 years and they were progressively getting worse. Once my two children had finished high school, I made the decision to stop working full time. I wasn’t sure what the next step was for me. I have always enjoyed art in some form or fashion. For a couple of years, I had my own fused glass business. I sold some and did some of the art show circuits. I went back to working full time again but my migraines were up to over 15 migraines per month. I decided to quit working and get healthy. I picked up a cup of acrylic paint and began creating paintings. I enjoyed it so very much and it helped quiet the migraines. I was asked by a business to create four paintings for their office. Once I started doing commissions and enjoying it more and more then I began to look into selling my art in art shows. Over three years ago I started my business, KK Art Creations-Pour Art on Your Walls. I enjoy the freedom of the schedule. I also love creating something that people can look at every day and give their mind a break from life and let themselves wander and relax.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of my favsorite places to take people in Dallas is Klyde Warren Park to people watch. We would wander around the area and eat from the food trucks. I would take them inside the Nasher Sculpture museum and the Dallas Museum of Art. After the day turns to night, we would drive over the Margaret Hunt HIll bridge and dine at Babbs BBQ ( I am a Kansas City native and bbq is in my blood). Afterwards we would drive to Bishop Arts and have dessert from Emporium Pies. If the week happens to fall when the Design District has art studios open then we would go visit the different studios and talk with artists. On beautiful afternoon I would take my friend to White Rock Lake and take a boat ride on the lake. We would also walk around and see all the wildlife and take it all in. A favorite place to eat is Victor Hugo’s Dining and Bar. Victor has some of the best cuisine in the city. A special place to see all kinds of natures beauty in one place is the Dallas Arboretum. I especially love it around Fall with all of the pumpkins lining the walkways and the huge pumpkin patch. A very unusual and unique shopping experience is going to Curiosities in Lakewood. I could wander for hours through all of the old antiques and one of a kind treasures that could be found inside the store.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to send a shout out to my friend Chris Miller from Urban Artist Market. He believed in me and gave me an opportunity to be in my first art show in Addison, Texas. I learned so much about how to market myself, booth configuration and set up, and pricing. Chris continued to believe in me and help me move forward to launch a website and continue in more shows. I also want to shout out to my family, Jeff Kort, Dylan Kort, Sydney Kort, who always encourage me and support me in all of my endeavors. They have helped at each of my art shows have confidence in my abilities and creations.
