We had the good fortune of connecting with Faiza Khan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Faiza, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Creativity. Its too early to say I’m successful yet but the most important factor, so far, is to be creative within the requirements defined by my clients. I read it somewhere “Listening is often the only thing needed to help someone”. My business is mostly known for customization, people come to me when they want something to be more special, usable yet creative. Therefore I try to put it all together creatively.

What should our readers know about your business?
My business is more about customization. The services I offer are not out of the box but what makes people choose me is the art of framing their emotions and feelings into something that receiver (or they themselves) can cherish forever. Once a client of mine reached me with a beautiful idea of preserving their heritage fabric and passing it on to next generation by quilting all those pieces together in a small dress that can be framed into a wall hanging. She wanted to pass her tradition to new generation in a way which they can see every now and then. While discussing with her, she told me, no one could understand her. That moment, I realized that how a very common set of skills can set you apart if utilized properly. Perhaps business studies helps me pull it forward well together but the most important thing is to get connected to my clients, understand their emotions behind the gifts they are getting made. Yet keep those gifts practically usable. I started this all as a hobby. Most important lesson learned in transitioning from hobby to business is that there is no place for mistakes and its super challenging to be creative without the room for mistakes. It took me a while to train my mind accordingly. When people reach me with their ideas, its challenging yet very exciting to express their ideas via single string of thread to be stitched thousands and thousands of times. But once its all ready, the happiness of my clients makes it all worth it. Those moments are really hard earned and I’m truely proud of it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
That would be so much fun. Dallas surely has many attractions for visitors to make the best time out of. The first place I’ll be taking my friend would be “Reunion Tower” around the sunset. I just love the view of whole city fromt the top when, when day meets the night. Than there are variety of eateries from barbecue, Thai, Chinese, Indian, Pakistani cuisines. We can enjoy every meal of day at different restaurant here. Depending upon the preference of my friend, we can visit Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, Klyde Warren Park, Dallas Meseum of Art are just to name a few.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Honestly there are many people who deserves credit and recognition in my story. For mentorship, its my aunt “Nishat Wasib”. She has been through the thick and thins of my life since the very beginning just like a mother. She has more faith in me and my work than I can ever have. For quality control, it’s definetely my husband “Mohsin Zaffar”, he has been very honest and supportive in elevating the quality of my products, services, work ethics and what not. I can not pen it all down how he has been the most helpful person throughout my journey. Be it for the things like setting up my studio to helping me find right machineries, looking into deals with me, dealing with clients, decisions making and what not. As I said, I can not list everything here but I would like to give him a huge shout out for all that he does for me. I couldn’t make it this far without his support. On the other hand, a big shout out goes to the Dallas community, my friends and my clients, it amaze me how blindly they trust my skills. It helps me so much in bringing out the best. Their faith in my work help me overcome my nervousness in trying out new things. Most of the time, people share their ideas with me if I can make something. And they give me an open access to be as creative as I can be. And that’s when I’m able to bring up something new. We work together like friends, discuss ideas and than finally when I make something, their happiness is what pays off all of my efforts. Specially their pain of traveling to me from miles away, and choosing me when they have many options available nearby. That makes a huge difference and pushes me to go beyond my levels of professionalism. So the journey of TailoredByFaiza is more about all these people who played their roles in one way or the other. But luckily I have a privilege of wearing this crown today.
