We had the good fortune of connecting with Joi Bailey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joi, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I wanted to create a safe environment for women to create and grow creatively. After spending time in many other male dominated tattoo shops in the beginning of my tattoo career, I realized how much the industry was lacking these type of spaces. I thought “how fun would it be” to work with like minded women and disarm the patriarchy while we do it!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art style would be described as “girly pop black and grey realism”. I’ve taken a spin on the masculine black and grey style that has been very prominent in the tattoo industry. I got to where I am today by blocking out all the haters. In sincerity I had to really to listen to myself and follow my dreams and listen to my intuition to take a big step in a very rigid industry.
I’ve learned to trust myself and also connect with my community on a deeper level, which uplifts everyone at the end. You really need community to keep each other accountable and motivate each other to be the best we can be!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
To show my friend a Denton-tastic day I would take them to breakfast at Seven Mile Cafe. We would enjoy some yummy breakfast, fresh juices, and lattes. Then we would go axe throwing at the local spots. Maybe stop by Juliet’s Jewels to look at their jewelry and clothes that the owner personally brings back to us from Asia. After that, we would hit happy hour at Mexican Oak for drinks and bottomless rice & beans. Ideally we would find a live music venue to end the night at like Rubber Gloves or even a house show!
