Meet Layna Dull | Makeup Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Layna Dull and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Layna, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Ever since I was a child I have been interested in the arts. From singing and writing to drawing and painting. I’ve simply just always loved art. My love for Halloween is what created my passion for makeup artistry and ultimately decided my career path.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started doing SFX makeup at 17, by 18 I was working professionally at a haunted house as a makeup artist. I pushed myself to learn as much as I could along the way. I worked on indie movies and took personal clients for Halloween makeup. I eventually branched out to learn new skills and started facepainting and doing airbrush tattoos for entertainment companies. I pushed a little further and started doing bridal and special events makeup for a company in Portland Oregon.
It definitely was never easy. Although my makeup resume is rather long and I’m very versatile in what I can do, none of these jobs were consistent but it never stopped me from pushing my way up. My love for art would never allow me to give up my creative outlet for a 9 to 5. I have definitely had to find the balance between stability and art.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to never give up on what you love to do. No matter if you are just beginning or some where in the middle, keep pushing. Every opportunity leads to the next.
I want people to know that even the craziest dreams can come true if you work hard enough to make them happen! Don’t give up! The simplest thing, like a holiday can be your inspiration to chase your dreams.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In all honesty I am a homebody! BUT we absolutely would have to go check out the Haunted Castle restaurant in Plano. Or maybe hit up a few haunted houses to walk through if they came during the month of October. Maybe catch a spooky ghost tour in Fort Worth! The possibilities are endless.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Hands down with out a doubt my husband deserves credit and recognition. Without him pushing me to gain new skills I would never be where I am now.
