We had the good fortune of connecting with Colt Bell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Colt, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I heard that Giselle was discovered at a shopping mall. I’ve always hoped something similar would happen to me. Now full disclosure, I don’t look like Giselle, nor do I frequent shopping malls. So, there was obviously an inherent flaw in my thinking, especially as a writer. I spent a long time hoping to be discovered, without really putting myself out there. As if some literary agent’s car would break down in front of my house and as I went to offer assistance, they’d ask, “Do you happen to have jumper cables—or even better—a manuscript for me to sell?” Playing it safe is not the way to go. Regrets are far more painful. The best things that have happened to me, have come when I put myself out there.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a writer and I fancy myself hilarious. I’m most proud of finishing my first novel this year. It hit a lot of snags along the way, but I stuck with it. While that was an entire journey, there’s this whole other experience that has to take place. I’m currently trying to land an agent and get my book published. I just want to write. But another facet of writing is being able to sell it to other people and convince them they need to read it. It’s getting over the excuses and the cop outs. You have to tackle what Steven Pressfield calls “The Resistance.” I believe my words have the power to make people laugh. I believe that’s one of my life’s purposes.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would dig into all the little neighborhoods. One neighborhood a day. We’d get there in the morning and eat, drink, and explore that specific area. Walking around Bishop Arts, State Thomas, Lakewood, and Lower Greenville. My favorite haunts are: Half-Price Books, Hudson House, Fireplace Lounge, The Goat, Avila’s Mexican Restaurant, White Rock Coffee, and Keller’s Drive-In. That’s not the complete list, but it gives you a taste.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife, Laura. She is my rock. Through all my musing, daydreaming, and lamenting–Oh, the lamenting!– she has been by my side. While I’ve wanted my dreams to just materialize, she is more action-oriented. She’ll say, “How are we going to do this? What’s our plan? Have you always been this handsome?”
