We had the good fortune of connecting with Nathan Westfall and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nathan, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
With over six years of experience in the corporate space, I’ve become quite familiar with the concept of impostor syndrome. Pursuing a creative career on the side helps me retain my authenticity as a total film nerd. My writing is the total expression of my thoughts and feelings. Depending on the story I’m crafting, there’s a good bit of me in there somewhere.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Recently, I just finished a script and submitted it to the Austin Film Fest. The story concept started brewing back in high school, but it took countless drafts and lots of iterations to end up where the story landed. I’m excited for the opportunity to share it.

Time and effort, there are peaks and valleys when it comes to any art form, and screenwriting isn’t any different. I struggled with giving myself the grace to step back and take time instead of forcing out something that wasn’t authentic onto the page.

The biggest lesson, if the story doesn’t flow to a natural endpoint or you don’t have an ending, you’re not ready to start. I’d much rather rack my brain for months on an ending than start the story out aimlessly.

I love movies, all kinds, any genre, I’ll take a crack at. But the ones I’m going to write are the kind that excite me.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Magnolia is a great way to get a feel for the city! Lots of options and variety. I’ve been non-alcoholic for over a year and have found the local kava spots to be a great way to kick back and relax.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Megan Najera, my amazing fiancée, I wouldn’t be where I am without her love, support, and lots of encouragement to sit down and write.

Sean Furey, I had the fortune of meeting Sean and his wife a few years ago at the Lone Star Film Fest. Through him, I’ve had several opportunities to get more involved in the Fort Worth film community.
