Meet Barbara Munoz Rivera

We had the good fortune of connecting with Barbara Munoz Rivera and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Barbara, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I didn’t have a thought process. It just kind of happened.
My ex husband and I are Mexican nationals and emigrated to this country on 2008 in pursue of the American dream. In Mexico I studied a Bachelor in Administration and International business with a specialty in traffic and logistics. I worked in one of the biggest shipping companies in the world as a sales manager. I loved my worked but I fell in love and my ex husband and father of my children was offered a job in Arizona.
I have had the opportunity to study abroad a couple of times 1 year in college in Europe and my sophmore year of highschool in Tulsa Oklahoma. Since then I’ve always knew I wanted to live away from Mexico. Don’t get me wrong I love my country but living abroad was something that was very enticing to me.
When my ex got the job opportunity in AZ we made the decision to take it. We lived there for 1.5 years and then we moved to Dallas Tx. Where we started the green card process. During all this time I couldn’t work in my career because of my immigration status. During this time I decided to study makeup since it is something I was always passionate about but never really got the opportunity to explore. Once I was finished with my certification I started getting gigs here and there to build up my portfolio. But there was something about weddings that I always loved. Everyone is happy, family and friends are always enjoying themselves. It is the most important day of someone and I am holding their self confidence in my hands.
Decided to pursue my passion and in little less than a year I was getting booked almost every weekend. In 2012 My ex and I realized we were expecting our first child and once I realized the cost of child care We made the decision to make it into a business since I was making more working during the weekends as a 9-5 and wanted to be present in our child’s growing process. My daughter is now 12 and I keep doing what I love.
My team of 5 and myself have won for 12 years in a row The knot’s Best of weddings servicing over 500 brides around the metroplex. I do what I love and have two babies now and have been there in every step of their growing process.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think that in professional artistry. what sets you apart is your style. Every artist has a different style. Mine is more natural and I focus on the skin of my client. Because a perfect canvas makes any work of art stand out.
Despite the fact that I talk to brides all the time and work on weddings weekly it has been really hard to do it specially during my divorce. I have sometimes deep conversations with my clients. And I do not want to come across as a cautionary tale.
The pandemic was one of the toughest time in our industry because weddings were cancelled. We did mostly solo clients and it was a rough year for everyone in the beauty industry.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
