Meet Lloyd Lumpkins | Architect

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lloyd Lumpkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lloyd, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The company where I had been employed for 13 years was undergoing significant changes in both personnel and strategic direction. As a result, I decided it was time to pursue my own path. My goal was to explore modern themes rooted in classical architecture. I always aspired to establish my own firm or at least become a partner in one. With this ambition in mind, I pursued a master’s degree in business following my Architecture degree.

Can you share more about your professional work and career journey?
What distinguishes me from many architects is my ability to listen attentively to my clients, translating their visions and understanding what inspires them. I take immense satisfaction in surpassing their expectations. It involves both the capability to visualize in three dimensions and meticulous attention to detail. I comprehend how transitions between spaces can anticipate and exhilarate, how materials interconnect, and how a home fits seamlessly into its surroundings, contributing positively to the community. My aim is to enhance the world’s beauty, promote mental and physical health, and increase enlightenment.
My aim is to enhance the aesthetics of spaces, improve mental and physical health, and promote enlightenment. I focus on creating homes that foster happiness and environments where memories can be made. These homes are designed to support wellbeing and inspire creativity.
I have really never given much thought about risk. I do live a more conservative life but I really put my faith in God to protect and provide. To lead me down the paths that he has prepared for me. Sure, there are hard lessons along the way, but that is part of the growth we all have to experience.
The most valuable lessons I have learned are that not everyone views the world as I do, and that’s alright. Additionally, I acknowledge that sometimes I may not be the ideal Architect for certain clients. I was raised with principles of perseverance, problem-solving, and offering assistance whenever possible. During instances when I cannot meet a client’s needs, I strive to help them find an Architect who can communicate effectively with them and understands their requirements.
Sometimes it is educating the client that what they want is out of their budget, or doesn’t meet their functional requirements, and trying to help them come to terms with what they really need.
What really makes me happy is seeing what I create in my head become reality! I have no Children of my own and these homes have always been my children. I love to drive by them over the years and see how they change, evolve, and mature. To see how they merge with the landscapes, and to see how new owners adapt and modify them to fit their needs through the years.
Additionally, it provides a sense of fulfillment to see photographs on social media showcasing family gatherings in the spaces I designed, contributing to the creation of lasting memories.
As I am newly engaged, I have had to examine this more closely. As Architecture is not just a job, but a hobby I am constantly engaged in activities and endeavors that revolve around Architecture. It can be challenging, but I am finding ways to incorporate family activities that others consider important. I am learning that vacations do not necessarily need to involve visiting architecturally significant sites.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh, it would always be about food, drink, and music! The food, drink, and music of Dallas provide a diverse and exciting experience. Notable establishments include Cafe Pacific, Musume, ShinSei, Victor Hugo’s Bucket and Rope, Louie’s Pizza, and don’t forget the Mansion Bar (especially on Friday nights). Brunch on the patio at Toulouse or Al Biernat’s on Oak Lawn is highly recommended and offers opportunities for socializing and observing the local culture. Additionally, there are always so many new places to explore in Dallas. It’s all about hanging out and people watching.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to extend my gratitude to everyone who has ever been a part of my life. I have learned and absorbed something from each person I have encountered, including my parents, scout master, pastors, teachers, fellow architects, and even past relationships.
Each of these individuals has prompted me to reflect on my life and contributed to shaping the person I am today.
I would like to express special recognition to my fiancée, April, and to my most influential architectural mentor, Robbie Fusch.
