We had the good fortune of connecting with Brieana Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brieana, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
As a tattoo artist, I spent so much time in eclectic coffee shops with other likeminded people drawing tattoos. I would sit there and draw for hours before my appointments, just enjoying myself and the space around me. I always thought to myself, “It sure would be cool if this was IN the tattoo shop.” Once I had my heart set there, I couldn’t shake the idea.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Being a tattoo artist has been the most rewarding but also most challenging career path. You have to have thick skin to be in this industry, which is something I very much so had to build along the way. And no, it wasn’t easy. Through so much heartache and exhaustion I have found myself falling and getting back up so many times. You are not only battling against yourself and your own personal life issues, but imposter syndrome and artists block are always knocking at the door too. Sometimes it’s even hard to fit in, or hard to feel like you belong anywhere in this industry. The beautiful thing is though, we all do in so many ways. Art is so complex and every artists style is important no matter what the rest of the industry thinks. We are here to make art for the people, and bring their stories to life. It’s such an incredible roll we get to play. This belief system is a strong backbone of why I built my studio, and everything that it stands for.
My art has always fit outside of the norm and has never fallen into any singular category. I like to think I’m somewhere between traditional and neotraditional with a whimsical touch. Though, I do a little bit of everything because I truly do love to make people happy and make good tattoos for
Them. However that fits. Nothing makes me happier than seeing someone walk out so pleased and transformed with their new tattoo.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Dallas is such an exciting place. There are so many good places to eat it’s unreal! Walking distance from the shop there’s Zaguan, a Latin cafe and bakery. Across the street you will find some of the best tacos in town at Cuates Kitchen. Both small business and family owned. Drive a little further down the street and you’ll find yourself in the heart of Oak Lawn, our beloved LGBTQ+ community. Where you can find more good food, good drinks, great DJ’s, drag shows and ENDLESS dancing. Mother’s House is lucky and proud to be right in the center of such a beautiful community.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Unfortunately the businesses where I began no longer stand. I started my journey at Fade to Black Tattoo Co. in Fort Worth under the mentorship of Chance Webb. I couldn’t have done any of this without them. I also spent many mornings in Acadia Coffee Shop in Fort Worth, that unfortunately also no longer stands. Those places shaped all of my big ideas and I’m very grateful for the people there that touched my heart so deeply.
