Meet Patricia Coleman | Curly Hair Stylist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Patricia Coleman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Patricia, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. Growing up as the older sister and a mother who had me at a young age, I naturally developed a strong sense of independence and finding ways to achieving my goals. In middle school, my mother decided to pursue cosmetology school, even though she completed the program but didn’t pursue it as a career. This experience planted a seed, and I became obsessed with looking at her cosmetology books and started doing my own hair. I wanted to learn more and more. It became clear to me that this was the career I wanted to pursue when I grew up. I even dressed up as a cosmetologist for career day in the 7th grade.
As I entered high school, I was already planning for cosmetology school and selecting subjects I was certain I would learn, such as chemistry and anatomy. It’s safe to say that I’m a planner, and all I wanted was to eventually enroll in cosmetology school. My mom continued to feed my passion for hair styling during my high school years by teaching me about hair cutting and coloring. Yes, I even did my friends’ hair, running an at home salon. lol.
Finally graduating from high school, I accomplished my first major milestone by enrolling in cosmetology school. I graduated within 10 months, and here we are, 18 years later. I am eternally grateful and feel incredibly fortunate to not only pursue my passion but also achieve success in it. It is a rare privilege, and I never take it for granted.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have a deep passion for clients loving and fully embracing their natural hair, no matter the texture, length, or curly pattern. I want every client that sits in my chair to discover their style. The most important thing about clients loving their natural hair is understanding what the hair needs and making sure the curls are healthy. I pride myself on putting the health of my clients’ hair as a priority.
The most significant challenge I encountered in my career was when I made the decision to relocate to Dallas in 2016. Leaving behind a loyal clientele that I had grown over the years, as well as starting over in an unfamiliar city. Despite the uncertainty and having to build a new clientele from scratch, I knew God had guided me to this place for a reason, and I was confident that He would provide. This move opened my eyes and exposed me to so many possibilities. When I think about my career while still in Kansas City, I had limited my thoughts to the extent of my potential in this industry. After two years of being in Dallas, I managed to build a clientele that allowed me to transition from working in a corporate-style salon to owning my own salon suite. This was an achievement that I had never even considered for myself before. Let’s just say THE BIG MOVE, WAS THE BEST MOVE!
Working in a more corporate-style salon provided me with valuable lessons in professionalism, excellent customer service, and effective bookkeeping and time management. Each season in my career has presented unique challenges and opportunities for growth. I have learned to embrace and appreciate the lessons and skills that each season brings, knowing that they are essential for my development. I am 100% certain that I am exactly where I am meant to be, and this realization makes my work feel more fulfilling and enjoyable. I have been able to create an environment in my salon that offers both my clients and myself a peaceful and relaxing space. Whether it’s a space for deep conversations or simply a place to unwind, I strive to provide a space, where each client feels comfortable and valued.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m definitely the planner in my friend group, so I love putting together things for us to do and getting everyone together.
One of my must-dos when anyone comes into town is what I like to call “The Thompson Experience.” The Thompson hotel has so much to offer all in one place, which is what I love, and it’s got a grown and sexy vibe. You really get a few different vibes. I like to start at Catbird, preferably during golden/sunset hours because who doesn’t love a good rooftop and great lighting for pictures? Grab a drink or two, a few small plates before heading to Monarch. Don’t forget to get the champagne in the lobby to sip on your way up to the restaurant. Here we just sit in the lounge area, no reservations needed. Another cocktail or mocktail and a dish or two to share. I make sure my friends know not to go crazy because the star of the night will be the King Crab Roll at Kessaku, where we end the experience. Kessaku has the views and vibes. Everyone I take on this tour loves it, and it’s always my go-to when clients ask me for recommendations.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I give all my praise to God!
