We had the good fortune of connecting with Kandyce Williams-jackson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kandyce, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
One piece of conventional advice I disagree with is the idea that you need to have everything perfectly planned and in place before starting your business. In my experience with KandyAppleTree, I’ve found that just starting is far more valuable than waiting for the “perfect” moment. Perfection can be paralyzing, and the best way to improve is through real experience. Learn as you go and refine along the way.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is deeply personal. Every piece I create is influenced by the world I see. It reflects my life experiences, current events, and The Culture. I use my work as a way to express thoughts, emotions, and perspectives that aren’t always easily put into words.

Getting to where I am today professionally wasn’t easy. There were times of doubt, creative blocks, and the challenge of balancing artistic expression with building a business. But I’ve learned that growth comes from pushing forward, even when things feel uncertain.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is to trust my own voice. It’s easy to get caught up in what others expect, but the most powerful work comes from staying true to my own perspective. I want the world to know that my art isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s about reflection and connection. Through my work, I hope to share pieces of my journey in a way that resonate with others.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting, I’d make sure we had the perfect mix of relaxing and exploring. Museums and galleries would definitely be on the list. I’d also take them to a farmers’ market or my favorite plant shop, Energy Gardens, where my art is displayed. We might try a pottery class or a food tour. Evenings would consist of deep conversations over drinks at home, a few swanky restaurants, and maybe a visit to a rooftop bar or local event. The goal would be to enjoy good company, great food, and interesting experiences around the city.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
One of my biggest inspirations has been my husband. He pushed me to start KandyAppleTree when I was hesitant and later encouraged me to leave my full-time job once my business took off. His belief in me and my creativity gave me the confidence to take the leap, and I’m so grateful for his support every step of the way.

I’m also incredibly thankful for my family, who help with in-person events. Their support makes such a difference, and I couldn’t do it without them! Having loved ones who believe in my vision and actively contribute to its success means everything to me.
