We had the good fortune of connecting with James Brown Thedrummer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi James, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success/the success of my brand is not being afraid to talk to anyone.

When I started my brand in order for me to connect with people at the next level I had to jump out of my comfort zone and talk to people I didn’t know very well.

Music Saved My Life and continues to save my life!! I believe that with all of my heart as I retrospect over my life. I had to shoot every shot presented before me because I missed 100% of the shots I didn’t shoot!
MY NETWORK IS MY NETWORTH!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Man what sets me apart is the fact that I am ME and I don’t compare ME to no one else. I trust and believe God has me right where I suppose to be when I need to be there! Comparison is a silent killer….DON’T DO IT!

My brand was birth out of the desire to be more than just a musician! I wanted to truly make an impact on the world and be an influence not just from behind the drum kit! God has given us many talents/gifts and it’s up to us to discover them! Music Saved My Life is not just a brand but it is a movement! The world can relate!

I want the world to know that as long as you keep God first, pray, do right by people, live righteously and put in the work you can do anything! Don’t let where you have come from or any past childhood traumas stop you. Self develop, learn, drop the pride and the ego that wants to defend itself and get better! YOU GOT THIS!

I am from Houston Texas born and raised. I had a tough upbringing and I was a hell of a kid who most counted out especially after my mom the late great Linda Wyatt Brown passed away when I was just 18 years old on Valentine’s Day due to complications with type 2 diabetes. She had both legs amputated, congestive heart failure and 9 in a half fingers (I saw half the ring finger decay and fall off then sealed in a sandwich bag). I stopped everything but music to help take care of her and when she passed away I was left here to pretty much figure it out on my own! Thank God I listened to that still small voice the Holy Spirit who was left here to lead and guide me. If I can make it out of a tough situation like that you can too!!! Center yourself around people who are better than you and who you aspire to be like. CHANGE YOUR MINDSET CHANGE YOUR LIFE! MUSIC SAVED MY LIFE!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting the area we would most definitely have to pull up to deep ellum and hit the freeman. The freeman is where the music happens on any given day and the food is fire! Then we would have to go to Terry Black to get some bbq because in my opinion they are the best in the city even though they a lil pricy lol! We would also have to hit this Jamaican spot in mesquite called Jamaican cook shop! They have some of the best jerk chicken in the world! If you haven’t notice we gone eat and eat good lol. After all that we will travel on down to JMUSIC PRODUCTIONS STUDIO which is a studio my wife and I own. We would connect and record some music, do a photo shoot and just enjoy time together in our element creating memories!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost I want to thank my lord and savior Jesus Christ. He is the reason that my brand is even a brand. He gave me the vision!! I also want to give a huge shoutout to my wife Shon Brown! She has been there with me through every thing. She has seen me at my highest and she has seen me at my lowest! She’s my biggest supporter and I love her a billion times!!! The one and only SHON BROWN! My kids J3 and Faithy. I love you! All of my family and friends in HOUSTON TEXAS and around the world! DALLAS TX!!! I love you REAL BIG!
