We had the good fortune of connecting with La-Shawnda Thompson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi La-Shawnda, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Taking risks has been a defining factor in my journey, especially when I reflect on pivotal decisions like relocating from the hustling streets of New York City to city of Dallas, Texas. While New York is often seen as the ultimate destination for dreamers, I felt a pull to explore new territory and carve out my own path in Dallas. It was a leap of faith that led me to discover a community rich in opportunities for creatives like myself.
Another significant risk was leaving behind the security of my corporate job to pursue my passion full-time with La-Shawnda’s House Of Beauty. Offering beauty services tailored for women on the go, from makeup to hair styling and even photography, has been incredibly fulfilling. Yet, this journey has been far from smooth sailing, with its fair share of highs and lows. However, through it all, I’ve learned to lean on my faith and trust in God every step of the way.
Ultimately, taking risks isn’t just about chasing success; it’s about refusing to let fear hold you back from living a life true to yourself. I’m grateful for every risk I’ve taken because each one has shaped me into the person I am today, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Trusting in God and following my instincts has been my guiding light, reminding me that sometimes the greatest rewards come from daring to step outside of your comfort zone. I believe if God called you to it He will see you through it. Im a living witness of the miracle working power of God. The same God who gave you the idea will give you the clients if you place your business in His hands.Throughout my career, I’ve proudly served as a hair makeup artist and photographer, dedicated to making women feel beautiful from the inside out. With over 15 years of experience as a freelance makeup artist, I’ve had the privilege of representing top cosmetic brands and working with high-profile ministers, models and celebrities. I enjoy working with the everyday women I absolutely love what I do.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My journey took a turn when I relocated to Dallas, facing life’s challenges head-on, including losing my job, my dogs, my home, facing divorce and homeless for 2 years. Despite these obstacles, I trusted God and trusted the process while never letting go of my passion for makeup artistry.
Launching La-Shawnda’s House Of Beauty has been a dream come true, allowing me to serve busy women on the go with mobile beauty services that offer true transformation. What sets me apart is not just my skill in makeup, but the genuine connection and uplifting experience I provide for my clients.
It goes beyond beauty, it’s my ministry. I’ve embraced my role as a transformation specialist, aiming to empower women to recognize their true beauty and embrace self-confidence through their God given identity. I also authored a children’s book called I’m not ugly God made me beautiful and have two new books coming out called, “I’m not weak God made me strong” and “The Beauty Basics Makeup Guide,” is a testament to my commitment to helping women feel confident and empowered through makeup.
Also I lead a women’s ministry for single mothers called Women of Fire. This June we’re relaunching my podcast The Beauty Exchange Podcast, for your daily dose of encouragement.
I believe true beauty stems from knowing who you are and owning your uniqueness. Through my work, I aspire to inspire, equip and encourage women to embrace their beauty, empowering them to feel confident from the inside out.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For a week-long trip with my best friend, I’d start for breakfast we would go to Yolk Restaurant for Mimosas and French toast.
For lunch we’ll indulge in some of our favorite treats, like strawberry, cookies and cream ice cream and New York-style pizza and wings. We’d enjoy these delights while spending quality time together with my daughters, Emani and Emiyah, who love these outings just as much as we do.
During our stay, we’d make sure to visit some of the area’s top attractions. We’d head to Frisco Ford Center in for some entertainment and excitement, perhaps catching a game or event. Roller skating at Skate Land would definitely be on the agenda, as it’s a favorite activity for all of us.
For a more relaxed evening, we’d unwind with a movie at B&B Theaters, enjoying the latest blockbuster in comfort. And definitely have a spa day at Tranquility Body Bar, we’d make a trip to Prayer Mountain in Duncanville, where we can find peace in the midst of nature.
We would go to Papadeaux’s for some fried catfish and coconut shrimp for lunch.
For dinner we’ll dine at Del Frisco’s Eagle steakhouse for some for some steak and lobster Mac and cheese.
Then we would go to Klyde Warren Park downtown Dallas to people watch and listen to some live music because it’s definitely a vibe.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I owe a debt of gratitude to several key individuals who have played pivotal roles in my journey. Firstly, I want to dedicate my shoutout to God, I’m grateful for His strength, wisdom, and creativity to do what I do.
Next, I am immensely thankful for my parents. My father, Christopher Frederick, whose unwavering support and belief in me when no one else did. His encouragement and financial support have propelled me forward. Also for my mother Denise for her love and prayers.
My two amazing daughters, Emani and Emiyah, hold a special place in my heart. They are my driving force, and I am motivated to leave a legacy for them, showing them that it’s possible.
Lastly, I want to recognize community of sisters, mentors, and spiritual leaders who have stood by me, offering encouragement and prayers every step of the way. Their support has been a source of strength and inspiration.
