We had the good fortune of connecting with Jazmyn Wilson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jazmyn, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve wanted to start my own business because of the freedom it affords me to pursue my other passions and skills. I also enjoy the flexibility and balance that being your own boss can facilitate.
What should our readers know about your business?
Right now I’m currently working at Candee Skin in Rowlett as an an esthetician that specializes in body waxing and skin care. I am very proud of where I am today because I started right out of high school with zero experience and now a year later I’ve learned so much knowledge and booked up majority of the time. One of the main challenges that I have over came on this journey is the lack of confidence in myself. I never wanted to put myself out there and promote my work to the world, and maybe I was just afraid of judgment or criticism but I had to learn that none of that matters and as long as you know what you believe in or want the only person in the way is you. Towards the end of my senior year. I needed a little extra money so I decided to try something new and start making little desserts. I started selling them on my social media platforms and they blew up almost instantly. I then started bringing them to school to sell between passing periods and would be sold out within thirty minutes, if that. That’s how “Luxury Treats” came about. Some challenges I have came across in this business was learning how manage everything else behind it such as the product and supplies while still bringing in profit. It is tricky, but with a good organized planned it’s a lot easier to handle. Another challenge was just trying to balance everything all at once. It is time consuming at times, so you’re just having to make sure you’re willing to prioritize and sacrifice your schedule if needed. After becoming very overwhelmed and stressed because I had over did myself by trying to do so many things at once, I realized it was best for me to take some time off to work on myself and take things one step at a time. Now that I’m definitely in a better place with a little more organization in life, I’ve decided I’m going to slowly start the treat business back up but this time with a bigger and better game plan. I can’t wait to see how it goes and where I will end up this go around.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
As expected, my family gets a huge shoutout. They’ve always believed in me and supported me in every way possible. Especially my mom, she’s always pushed me to do better and work harder. She’s passed down so many life lessons and good advice to make me the woman I am today. Next, I want to just thank my boss, Candice Johnson, for giving me the opportunity to come learn and gain experience from her and the team. I’ve already been taught so much and can’t wait to see what’s yet to come.
My last shout out goes to Shawnda Rodgers, my high school cosmetology teacher. Without her I wouldn’t be where I am today. When I got into the class, I was initially in it for fun, not really taking it serious as I should, but she definitely made me buckle down and really figure out what life is going to be. She taught us to never give up and to always give your all no matter what. She always believed in us, and always saw the full potential within us even when we didn’t ourselves. She taught us how to be more independent, stick up for what we believe in, how to work as a team, be more confident within ourselves, and tried preparing as much as she could for the real world and without her, I don’t think that I would’ve actually found the drive to work as hard and finish strongly as I did so I just appreciate her for showing love and always giving her all and never giving up on us. I also just appreciate all of my classmates, for just sticking through it together, and creating the bond that we had through all the long days and endless hours of studying every single day. I’m just grateful we all made it out and hope to be we’re successful in life.
