We had the good fortune of connecting with Lucy O’Connell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lucy, what is the most important factor behind your success?
To me, keeping my brand authentic to myself is so important. Millions of people are trying to make it in entrepreneurship, so doing what everyone else is doing isn’t going to work. You need to do YOU! Don’t copy everyone else for views. You’ll feel awkward and won’t have authenticity to back it up. Even if you feel self-conscious about what you are doing, as long as it’s authentic to you, it doesn’t matter. Because authenticity is long-lasting. Authenticity keeps you from burning out.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I marked ‘other’ because I consider myself an artist/creative, but I also work as an employee during the day.
My day job is as CEO of Iron Cowboy, where I manage the campaigns, social media pages, sales, employees, fitness app, community, content, courses, live events, etc.
On the side, I hustle as a content creator, Amazon influencer, and photographer.
I started creating content in 2018 for my Intro to Communication class in college. I had to create a media project, so I created a makeup page. The class voted on my project as the best, so I got 100% in the class and decided to keep my page going.
I took a year break and then started creating more lifestyle and fashion videos, moving away from makeup. I love doing makeup, but it takes longer than I’m willing to commit in a day for my editorial looks.
At the end of 2023, I started making vlogs. They didn’t take off on TikTok, and that really bothered me. I was niche and SO consistent. In February of 2024, I decided to start posting those vlogs on Instagram. This is when things started to take off for me.
I still have a small following, but I am constantly getting free items to unbox and review, which is great content for my page and a huge boost to my confidence.
On the other side of my entrepreneurial journey, I’ve enjoyed photography since Elementary School and loved doing photoshoots with my sisters and cousins when we were growing up. But it wasn’t until April 2023, I quit my job and worked on my photography over the summer, using my dad’s camera.
At the beginning of 2024, I bought my own camera and started to take it seriously. I began posting on social media and was excited to see my video views in the thousands. With consistency on my photography page, I started to get bookings.
As of today, I am still working at my day job, and I am hustling on the side. But after a year of trying to grow my content creation and photography, things are finally rolling, and I’m beginning to reap the rewards of my hard work!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
One of my favorite spots is Classic Skating! It’s cheap for a pass, and you can spend all there. They just barely renovated it, and the vintage vibes are SO fun.
My favorite sushi place is Tsunami Sushi in Lehi. They have many options, even for vegetarians like me, and the rice is perfect. My husband and I love to get our sushi to go and do picnics when it’s warm enough, so I would definitely recommend that.
Our favorite Indian place is Tandoor Grill. It’s connected to a hotel, so people often overlook it. But it’s delicious every time, and they include dessert with every meal.
Some people say Disneyland is the happiest place on earth, but I beg to differ. My favorite place is our local amusement part, Lagoon Park. I think this is my 8th year with a season pass!
I don’t drink alcohol, but Utah is covered in Soda shops. My favorite one is Quench it- as it has the best caffeine free options!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents, Sunny and James Lawrence, for providing me with all the opportunities that have contributed to my success.
