We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyann Marie and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tyann, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I am from Memphis, Tennessee. Growing up in Memphis was an intriguing experience. I grew up in the church but I’ve seen a lot of things and experienced different people. The impact that my city made on me was to make it and never stop. Memphis is like grind city. Everyone wants a come up and sometimes you had to be in the streets to get that. Luckily, I was blessed to be around individuals who saw my potential and pushed me to work with my gifts. So instead of being in the streets, I took that street hustle culture and I put it into business ideas.
What should our readers know about your business?
I started my journey of entrepreneurship in 2013. I began making prom dresses and custom clothing. Eventually I became a self taught makeup artist. With those two skill sets I decided to become a beauty bar. “Tyann Marie; Obey your beauty” After graduating in 2017 I attended Alcorn State University. Getting my degree in business administration. Not long into my first semester I realized that this was not the route I wanted to go and became very depressed because my decisions were being based on taking the traditional route. Within my first semester I found out that was pregnant. Although I thought it was the worst thing of my life, that was actually the birth of my career. I dropped out of college began to work a regular 9-5 while also pursuing my beauty career. Not really knowing what route to take I stuck to it. I remember I got fired from my job and I was having a conversation with my mentor Vaneshia and she asked me what was my next steps. I couldn’t give an answer because truthfully I was content and just living life. She proceeded to ask me what am I good at and I told her make up. The task she gave me was that I had one week to enroll in beauty school. I thought she was insane but I grayed her because she never led me wrong. Eventually I went to Ogle school and got my license to become an Esthetician. While receiving my license I opened a spa. Bodyann Beauty and spa where I specialized in skin, makeup and waxing. I expanded my spa with 6 months moving into a bigger building and employing other solo estheticians like myself. While receiving my license I worked as part time cocktail waitress and was a mother of two. My time was very limited but I had a goal in mind. One of my great friends had a business idea to start a professional cocktail waitress company called Bottle Babes. I started off as one of her workers but I saw a bigger value with the company and decided to partner with her. After one year of building a brand for Bottle Babes we have successfully worked with restaurants, bars and corporate offices. Bottle Babes is a mobile bartending company and hiring agency to help young women develop their brand in mixology. Although both of my careers doesn’t intwine with each other I get to live out both of my dreams without having to compromise who I am because it doesn’t fit the norms.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m starting to get into my soft girl era now so I love a nice little self care day. On a chill day I would go to The Statler. After leaving The Statler I would go have lunch at Sky Blossom. My go to order is their cheese wontons, Korean BBQ with the margarita flight to finish it. I also would visit Spa Castle. I get massages a lot but no other spa that I have been to has topped their massages. Lastly I would finish off at one of favorite spots in Dallas; Spatch Kitchen and Cocktails. The vibes are immaculate. The lemon drops be dropping and the food is great! Not to mention it is also black owned.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First I would love to give honor to God because without him anything in my life would not be possible. Secondly, I would love to thank my mom for always pushing me and supporting in all of my decisions. My mentor Vaneshia Moore for always having my back and being my support system. Lastly, I would love to shoutout my high school mentors Jaida Nelson, Antionette Morris and Decorrian McKinney for pushing me beyond my limits.
