We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Carlton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lauren, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
You have to do what the 95% of people won’t do in order to set yourself aside from the rest. If it was easy then everyone would do it and I always like to remind myself of a quote ‘persistence over resistance’.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have worked ever since I was able to. Initially earning £5.08 an hour as a retail sales assistant. I used to work as many hours as I could around college to save up money for my petrol when I passed my driving test.
During my university years I worked full time for a global marketing company and would complete any missed lectures online in the evening. This company was a very commission driven business and taught me very early on that I had the hunger for more. I was one of the top earners and this is where I learnt that I was a top sales person. I didn’t love what I was selling which lead me to move my career path to luxury property then car sales which I also thrived in.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is fun because my best friends visit Dubai often to see me and we are very similar! Our ideal week consists of a fresh coconut and sunbathing on the beach at Jumeirah. Lunch at shimmers and then a dog walk in the evening with my boy Axel at west beach while the sun sets.
We love to have our pyjamas on by 9pm and on the odd occasion we decide to have a few cocktails we would likely go to Ce La Vie or Zuma. We don’t do clubs as I feel we are a little past that and the hangovers don’t quite hit the same anymore when I was 19/20!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Dad has been my biggest inspiration in life. He was the owner of a very reputable make up company for a number of years. He came from nothing and taught me the meaning of hard work and that nothing worth having comes easy.
There have been many times where I have struggled with direction in my life and what I wanted to achieve. He has always encouraged me to work hard and think with a business approach to everything. ‘If it makes money it makes sense’, within reason of course!
A book that I remember vividly reading and impacting my outlook when I was younger and impressionable was ‘the subtle art of not giving a f*ck’ and it reiterates the importance of not caring what people think. I can’t stress enough that other peoples opinions of you really don’t matter. As long as you know who you are and those closest to you, that’s all that matters.
