Meet Shekura Mollice | Baker and Cake Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Shekura Mollice and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shekura, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I can honestly say, that I didn’t choose this career path. It chose me! From the time I had to write an essay on what I wanted to be when I grew up, that dream was to be a nurse. Back then the artistry of cakes wasn’t as broadcasted as it is now, so a baker wasn’t your “ideal” career selection. I grew up in a big family that wasn’t shy of the kitchen! My mom was known as the baker of the family and that lady taught me everything I know about cakes, pies, candy…you name it! But baking was shown to be something you do to make people happy and a way to express love, never as a career. It wasn’t until after being a struggling college student, my father had suffered a massive heart attack and stroke and was literally expected not to pull through. But by the grace of God he did. I ended up bringing my parents to be with me so I could help my mom care for my dad. Well finances were fighting pretty heavy, and my little minimum wage job wasn’t cutting it and finding a better paying job was slim to none. God specifically told me during that time while laying in my bed one day, “I put it in your hands what to do…bake your way out. “. And ever since then, I’ve been putting my hands to the mixers. I’m literally experiencing so much joy with the freedom to be creative and creating so many beautiful pieces that bring so many smiles to people’s faces. To hear you’ve made someone’s day, or someone cried happy tears because their cake was more than they could have asked for, makes my heart explode with happiness! I feel so blessed to be able to do that.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I believe what sets me apart from others, is that I aim to cause every customer I come in contact with, feel like a valued person and not just another payment opportunity. So many times we patronize small or large businesses and we are treated like just another dollar to be made and not as a blessing. Sure, I‘m going to get in the kitchen and create something awesome, but when a person calls, emails, message, or DM me my goal is to make sure the experience as a customer is 5 star. I can say I am most proud of the chance I took on myself. I’ll be honest, I grew up as a timid child lol! So taking a leap of faith in running a small business, dealing with the public, putting myself out front with the possibility of negative views and feedback along with getting positive was a great accomplishment of facing my fears. I honestly have to give all praises to God for being where I am today. None of this would be possible without Him. Has everyday been a breeze and clear in the steps I needed to take? Absolutely not, it has been some scary days with stepping out on faith, taking orders from higher end clientele, etc…but all of that has been completely worth it! I’ve learned so much within the 8 years I’ve been operating, but the most important thing learned was literally taking one day at a time. That’s so basic but it’s so important! Each day comes with its own adventure no matter how well we planned ahead! If anyone can take away anything from what I’ve expressed in my journey, I hope it would be to trust God and take a chance on yourself. My business was literally built off of faith and trust in God.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Now don’t get me wrong, after having two kids a good time is a clean house, a good book to show followed by a nap LOL!! But of course a must go to spot to eat would be Uncle Julio’s! I love Mexican food hands down! And afterwards go take a few rounds at Dave and Busters! I’m pretty mild going when it comes to a night on the town!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Oh my gosh, I have had and still have such great support! Some awesome sisters that literally sacrificed time and money to stick by my side for events, markets, late night prep, store runs and all! I would literally have a paragraph of names! But those friends and family members know exactly who they are, However, there are two people that literally helped jump start me and led me in the right direction with mentorship, business connections, software, products and so many things, and that’s Nicole Hawthorne (Owner of NHCO Botanical Bodycare) and Chris Black (My Former Business Manager) They have no idea how thankful I am for their guidance and support on how to even get this business jump started. Now that I am flying on from all of their help, my AMAZING husband is carrying me on with knocking this business out of the park with literally being my right hand! I was a one woman show for many years, and that was hard. But my husband, he makes doing this business so much easier to navigate through.
