We had the good fortune of connecting with Sufiyah Esema and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sufiyah, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Ever since I was young, I’ve been fascinated by hats and headpieces. Watching the Royal families wear Fascinator mesmerized me. This passion never faded, and when I discovered the craft of millinery, I knew I had to pursue it.
Initially, I found a limited selection of fascinators and headpieces that truly appealed to my personal style. This limited gap in the market fueled my desire to create unique, handcrafted pieces that would empower women to express their individuality. However, starting my own business was overwhelming. I had to learn the technical aspects of millinery, navigate financial hurdles, and developed my marketing skills.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My Fascinators are more than just Headpiece.
Each item is crafted with quality and craftsmanship in mind to ensure you have a stunning and lasting accessory for any occasion.
It wasn’t easy starting out with no formal training and capital, but seeing my creation light up women’s faces motivates me to push boundaries.
I’ve learnt that resilience, embracing your imperfection and staying through to your vision are key to success.
With my brand (Flourish Concept), our mission is to renew women’s confidence while keeping affordability in mind.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are several exciting places to check out in Lagos, Nigeria.
1. Nike Art Gallery, it has the largest collection of contemporary African art.
2. Rufus and Bee is a rooftop dining with stunning city views.
3. Lekki Conservation Centre and
4. Omu Resort – it’s perfect for adventurous travelers!
It’s very important to try out our local dishes like Fufu and Afang soup, Amala and Gbegiri soup, and Water yam pudding.
The above meals are sold in local restaurants.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my family, especially my immediate younger sister, Gift Esema, who has always been my biggest support system. When I started with no millinery experience, she sported my early creations with enthusiasm, even when they were rough around the edges. She’d proudly tell everyone she met that I make fascinators. Her unwavering belief and constant encouragement played a huge role in helping me chase my passion. Thank you.
