We had the good fortune of connecting with April Tungate and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi April, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started my business after loosing my dad unexpectedly in 2019. I was angry and sad that I didn’t have any good quality photos of him. I needed an outlet and my wife got me a camera so I took that anger and focused on photography!

It started out just taking photos of my nieces and dogs and then grew to more family and friends! That’s when I fell in love. I wanted to give others what I didn’t have. The gift of memories.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
April Tungate Photography is a LGBTQ+ owned business! As a plus size queer woman and I am very passionate about inclusivity.

Not just the LGBTQ+ community but inclusive to all! No matter the size, color, or disability. April Tungate Photography is a safe space for you to come together with those you love to have your memories documented.

I’m a member of the Capable Community and have invested in eduction to be the best for my clients. I know how to work with families with disabilities and have all the patience in the world!

It’s super important for me to know how to photograph and edit all different skin tones! I’ve invested a lot of time in education to be sure that my clients don’t look like someone they are not. I want my clients to see the best version of themselves when they look at their final images from our photoshoots.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m more of a homebody! So I’m not sure of all the hot spots. However, if I was to plan a day trip with someone from out of town we would definitely go to Green Valley Gardens in Aubrey. It’s my favorite U-Pick Flower farm! The owners Matt and Amanda are absolutely the sweetest and it’s the perfect spot for a picnic.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Jamie English Portraits! Jamie is one my dearest friends in the industry and honestly my biggest cheerleader. When I’ve got questions or am doubting my edits etc. Jamie is my go to hype girl.

She doesn’t hold back and tells me what I need to hear! It’s always good to have a friend in your corner who you know will tell you the truth even when you don’t want to hear it.

Jamie and I work really well together, she specializes in weddings I often second shoot for her!
