We had the good fortune of connecting with Bri Morales and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bri, what role has risk played in your life or career?
You always hear people say that life begins outside of your comfort zone. I can personally attest to that. In February of 2022 I was working a wonderful, steady 9-5 when I was offered a position to be a full time photographer and have the chance to grow my business, Photos by Bri. I was petrified.
Being 26 at the time, about to lose my insurance under my family’s medical plan, and having the autoimmune disease, Lupus, I thought to myself that there’s no way I could possibly make this leap..
But as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Faith is taking the first step even when you can’t see the whole staircase.”
And a quote Erin Hanson popped in my head:
“What if I fall?”
“Oh, but darling, what if you fly?
It all worked out in the end. I was able to gain experience and knowledge from my new position, I was able to join a mentorship to shadow weddings, and I was able to book portraits on my own. I watched my business grow exponentially in the last year alone!
Sometimes there is no good answer, and sometimes you just have to leap before you look.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
While trying to break into the wedding industry I realized that I wanted to have a certain style of photography, and I realized that I just don’t photograph light and airy very well. I’m more warm and moody and I like warmer colors. There’s nothing wrong with that, I just need to build a clientele that will appreciate my work. It definitely was not easy to come to terms with and I definitely tried very hard to make my images look like everyone else’s and it only ended up hurting my business in the end.
In the end I realized that you have to stay true to yourself and your art and just be you. The right people will come along and you’ll find your own path. I came to terms that I am not a light and airy wedding photographer, I am a warm and moody portrait photographer and that’s ok!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Sunday- I would stop by Maker’s Gym in Frisco first for a quick photoshoot because I never stop working and everyone needs an updated headshot. Depending on the weather I would go to the Railyard in Frisco and listen to live music with my Bernese mountain dog, Beyla and eat from the food trucks.
Shop downtown in the rail-district and maybe get a coffee at Summer Moon.
Monday- I would take a tour of the Star Center and eat at the Common Table
Walk around and visit the collectibles shop and the boutique stores.
Tuesday- I would definitely visit the Dallas Zoo because the elephants have my heart
I would then come back and relax at the Float Spot
Wednesday- I would go to see a movie at iPic and relax in their oversized loungers
Thursday- Go to the Frisco Library to visit Rex and pick up a few new books to read
Friday- at night we would go to Downtown Denton to Andy’s Bar and Paschall’s
Saturday- Trees in Deep Ellum for a concert
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would not be where I am without the help of April and Jason Sapp Photography who have mentored me for the past year! They have been phenomenal mentors and even better friends, thank you guys. I would also like to thank Fred Mahusay from Fred Shots Photography for always cheering me on and watching me grow as a photographer.
I would not be where I am without the help and support of my mom, and my boyfriend, Nick. They have loved me through every bad day and cheered for every triumph. They truly are my biggest support system, cheerleaders, and advocates. I love you.
