We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelton Jeffery and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kelton, what role has risk played in your life or career?
In approaching risk, my first instinct is to thoroughly evaluate potential negative outcomes and associated consequences. I conduct a comprehensive analysis to ensure that the risks taken won’t have a detrimental impact on myself or my family in a way that cannot be overcome. If the potential downsides are manageable and the overall impact aligns with our ability to recover, I am more inclined to consider and, if appropriate, embrace the calculated risk. This approach allows me to navigate challenges with a balanced perspective, weighing potential rewards against the manageable risks involved.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As the Director of Surgical Programs and Chair of the Health Equity Diversity and Inclusion Commission (HEDIC) at Children’s Health—one of the nation’s premier pediatric institutions—I lead the Growth and Development Team, spearheading a hospital-wide initiative to expand access to surgeries, particularly complex procedures, for families in Plano. Being part of an institution ranked in all 10 pediatric specialties by US News and World Report is both an honor and a testament to our commitment to excellence.

Beyond my roles in healthcare leadership, my journey took an entrepreneurial turn when I ventured into starting and successfully running my own vending machine company. This venture not only broadened my professional portfolio but also became a key player in supplying businesses across the DFW area with top-notch vending machine services.

The decision to establish the vending machine company was fueled by a passion for entrepreneurship and a desire to diversify my professional endeavors. From navigating the initial challenges of establishing the business to ensuring its growth and sustainability, the experience has been a transformative part of my career. Juggling the responsibilities of healthcare leadership and entrepreneurship required a unique set of skills, and I embraced the opportunity to wear different hats.

Throughout this entrepreneurial journey, lessons were abundant. From honing financial acumen to mastering logistics and client relations, each challenge brought valuable insights. Today, I take pride in the successful operation of the vending machine company as a testament to my dedication and adaptability in navigating the dynamic business landscape.

Receiving the Dallas Business Journal 40 Under 40 award is a proud milestone, not just for my healthcare contributions but also as recognition of the entrepreneurial spirit that drives me. This accolade fuels my motivation to continue striving for greatness in both healthcare leadership and entrepreneurial pursuits. What I want the world to know is that, alongside my commitment to healthcare advocacy, I am a dedicated and successful entrepreneur contributing to the business landscape in DFW. Through my vending machine company, I reinforce my goal to be a pillar in the community—especially for those who lack a voice—ensuring they have unwavering support in their corner.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Alright, buckle up for the ultimate friendcation in my neck of the woods! First things first, we’re diving headfirst into the steak game because, let’s be real, that’s a non-negotiable. Ruth’s Chris is our top pick for a juicy steak that practically melts in your mouth, and if that doesn’t satisfy the carnivore in us, Papa Bros Steakhouse is a solid second—no room for veggie debates here.

Now, to shake off the meat coma, we’re hitting up Bottled in Bond. It’s the kind of place where you can sip on your drink, groove to some live tunes, and just soak in the good vibes. We’ll need that chill atmosphere because, trust me, the week’s just getting started.

Downtown Dallas is our playground for diverse eats – it’s like a foodie’s paradise. I’ve got a laundry list of spots we could hit, so let’s play it by ear and see where our taste buds take us. And speaking of views, we’re jetting off to the Park Cities Club. The panorama from there is practically a love letter to Dallas, and hey, as a member, it’s like my VIP pass to the city’s skyline.

But wait, there’s more! We’re making the pilgrimage to Legacy West in Plano. It’s not just about the great food joints; it’s a shopping haven, and you know how much you love to flex those retail therapy muscles.

So, grab your appetite, your dancing shoes, and maybe a spare credit card for Legacy West. This week is about to be legendary, my friend!

Since we’re in the heart of football territory, we’re paying a visit to The Star – the holy grail for any football enthusiast. Now, I might not bleed blue and silver, but hey, when in Dallas, you can’t pass up an inside scoop on America’s Team.

We’ll stroll through The Star, soak up the football vibes, and maybe catch a sneak peek of where the Cowboys practice – the behind-the-scenes magic. I might not be a Cowboys fan, but I’ve got the 411 on all the offerings there, and trust me, it’s a touchdown of an experience.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate this shoutout to my father. Throughout my younger years, I had the privilege of witnessing his leadership across diverse roles—from guiding our community at the church to serving on the school board of the district I graduated from. Although, at the time, the full extent of his accomplishments didn’t entirely resonate with me, growing older has afforded me a deeper appreciation for the prestige associated with his roles.

Now, as I navigate challenges in both the business world and life in general, I turn to him for guidance. His invaluable insights consistently provide perspectives I might not have considered, shedding new light on situations. It’s impossible to tell my story of career success without acknowledging the profound influence he has had on shaping my journey.
