We had the good fortune of connecting with Chad Plumlee and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chad, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk is something that is a part of every decision, but I think especially in business you have to be strategic and have pre-determined goals. There are crossroads in your life, at least with me where I could continue down a road making a comfortable living (pharmaceuticals) or venture out to start a small business that is passion driven, rather than financially. Risk plays a major factor in this type of decision and you have to be comfortable that this path may not look like the vision you had in your mind! At the end of the day, these choices are what will ultimately determine some of your happiness. I never want to look back on life and feel like I didn’t make a choice because I was scared of the risk!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We opened the original Cadence Cyclery in downtown McKinney in 2011 and there are now five locations including a new one in California! The bicycle industry is a challenging field and I would say hiring good employees is a key component to success. Our goal is to separate our shops from others through customer service and the experience. With competition from online sources and other shops, we strive to have the best customer experience. I learned some of this from our partnership with Sewell Auto Group, who sponsors our cycling team. People understand the “Sewell Difference” and I hope they feel this way when they walk into any of our locations. Our staff is trained to have the same high level of service, no matter the customer or what they are purchasing.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As I mentioned, our first location was in downtown McKinney and it is still one of my favorite places to hang out. You can participate in a morning group cycling ride and then have lunch on the patio at the yard. Afterward, there is a ton a unique shopping and you could stop by one of the several wine bars. Obviously, I would end the trip with a stop into Wattage Coffee Co., which is located inside the Cadence Cyclery location!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family are obviously my number one supporters, but I have been fortunate to partner in the bike shops with a close friend, Damon Williams. I feel like we have the best staff in the business and the success would not be possible with people like Mike Valentine and Eric White, as well as many others.
