We had the good fortune of connecting with Tetza and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tetza, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I don’t think I ever considered a different kind of career outside of the arts at any point in my life. I don’t think I really could. If there were an easier path that seemed realistic for me, I’d consider it. However, I don’t think there’s a reality where I could be happy in a career that isn’t involved in the arts in any way. Growing up I always wanted to be creating in some way. I continue to pursue this career because I love my art so much and think the world should experience it too- not just me.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I make music pretty much exclusively out of my bedroom. I’m a singer/songwriter/vocal producer and occasionally music producer as well. My music style is pop music with strong RnB influence sprinkled with Y2K nostalgia. Some inspirations behind my music include SZA, Kehlani, Doja Cat, Victoria Monét, Frank Ocean, D’mile, Pharrell, and many others. I love strong, unique, and often jazzy melodies with interesting and sometimes intricate rhythms. I also love interesting and playful lyrics. All of this supported by big and beautiful background vocals and strong visuals. All of this with some dope choreography and you got a pretty good idea of what my art looks like. It’s definitely difficult every day to pursue my art while also living in an expensive city and having to pay the bills. A full time job+ full time music+ eating+ sleeping+ having fun= more than 24 hours in a day. I often times feel like it’s impossible, but I’ve never considered giving up. I really believe in my art so I have no choice but to keep going. Tetza is a family name representing my Jewish heritage and honoring my family of Holocaust survivors- my grandfather, Ervin, credits his sister Tetza for inspiring him to keep fighting for his life even when all seemed hopeless. My middle name is Tess after my great-aunt and I wanted to honor her and my Grandfather as they both inspire me immensely. Thinking about them and their story puts a lot into perspective for me and makes me want to fight harder.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ooh. For great Indian food, there’s this place called Indian Table in Brooklyn. It’s probably what I’d recommend the most. Or there’s a Venezuelan place called Guacuco also in Brooklyn that’s insane. I’d suggest we see some live music if that’s available at any venue around, but I’m honestly such a home body and don’t know the hot spots for great nightlife or anything.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I definitely owe a lot of my confidence and chutzpah in what I do to the community theater I performed with as a kid. Golden Performing Arts Center in Woodland Hills, CA was my happy place. Getting to perform consistently allowed me to really discover my deep and almost spiritual love of live performance. The staff there was so wonderful and always made me feel powerful and capable- which is a really special thing to feel as a young girl and was so foundational to my ability to pursue the arts professionally . Specifically I want to shout out Dan Davis and Shelli Miller. I’ll never forget my time there and I don’t take it for granted.
